Who had a vag birth with twins?

I know if they turn out to be momo I just can't. I know then I'll be having a caesar at 32-33 weeks and count myself lucky for that.

But IF we get super lucky and they're not momo - do people usually have a vag birth? And when approximately? Induced because twins are considered full term earlier?

Tell me all, please!

DS had more or less a perfect lead in (waters broke at the OB's office 2 days after EDD), short labour and ventouse. So I know I'm not likely to get THAT lucky again lol!

Re: Who had a vag birth with twins?

  • I had a vag birth at 35w6d and was not induced.  Labor from start to finish was less than 8 hours.
  • can't answer all the questions- but just an fyi- twins are not considered full term any earlier than singletons - it's still 37w... they just happen to come at an average of 35-36w in general.

  • What's a ventouse? I don't think I've heard of that.
Anyhow, I had a vaginal delivery (scheduled induction) at 37w6d with my boys. Labor lasted about 12 hours, the pushing stage was 3 hours of that. (Honestly I think that's partly due to my epidural! I should have had them turn it down b/c I didn't feel the urge to push at all and I think my pushing was less effective as a result.)

Anyhow, the statistic is that 50% of twins are delivered vaginally.

  • I delivered vaginally at 30 weeks.  I went in to the hospital for 6 weeks of bedrest and the first night I was there my water broke on twin A.  They were unable to stop my contractions and 5 hours later I delivered twin A who was head down.  17 minutes later I delivered baby B who was originally transverse and 5 oz. bigger than baby A, but the doctor manually turned B before I began to push... glad I had an epidural.  Overall it was a great labor and delivery experience even though it was early.

  • Thanks macchiato. Ventouse is the suction cup. DS would get to crowning then slip back, not that the pushing wasn't enough but you can't do 1 long push for that long... so next time he was crowning they just sucked him out :-)

Trust me, I've researched epidurals until my head hurt (not from spinal headache) and it wasn't the epi. Not unless you had it from some 1950s relic. My guess is you weren't ready to push that early and could have been left at 10cm to labour down (ie bubs descend) then have a much shorter pushing phase just as effectively. That's what they did with me as I wasn't allowed to push more than an hour.

I think Queen Victoria was actually uncsonscious when at least 1 of her kids was born (chloroform)...but even without ANY pushing...contrax work like the dickens!

BTW I begged them NOT to turn it down (they did intitially and it was awful)... :-)

  • Oh, and from what I've read on the boards, most OBs will induce around 38 weeks with twins (unless there's a compelling medical reason to go earlier), though it ranges from 37 to 39 weeks. 37 weeks is term for any baby.

  • I was induced at almost 39 weeks, simply because my OB did not want me to go past that point, for fear of the placenta giving out, etc. From start to finish was about 10 hours. Both babies were head down going into the induction. I started pitocin around noon, doc broke my water at 2pm, got the epidural at 5, and delivered at 9:50pm and 10:03pm. I pushed for about 30 - 45 minutes for baby a, my son. Baby b, my daughter, was smaller by 10oz. and only took one push. I had to deliver in an operating room, but i was able to stay in my labor bed (which they just pushed into the OR - i asked not to be moved to the OR table). All in all, it was much better than I expected (although better is a relative term ;) Maybe I should say it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be!
  • Hello! I was on bed rest for 8 weeks before having my boys. I was induced at 29 weeks 2 days. I was not able to have an epidural so it was naturally. I had them vaginally and they were 15 minnutes apart and Twin B was breech. At the time it was painful but now that they are here I don't even remember the pain.
  • I had a vaginal birth at 36 weeks 2 days...I was induced due to high blood pressure....From the start of induction until the birth of Nolan who was baby b was about 9 hours....Which about 2 hours was pushing....There was an hour between the birth of my boys...I think my dr turned down the pitocin and then wanted it turned back up because I wasn't contracting and it didn't get turned up when it should have!  I had an epidural at 9 cm, because I couldn't fathom waiting thru contractions for another hour and then pushing out 2 babies....I didn't have a epidural with my older son....but I am so glad I did have an epidural this time around, that's for sure!

  • My girls came at 36w5d.  I had a vaginal delivery.  My water broke at 6 am, I started pushing at 2 pm and had my first baby at 6 pm (with the help of a vaccuum) and the second baby came 14 minutes later.

My peri wouldn't induce until 39 weeks.

Interesting! And yeah, that's what my Baby A was doing--crowning and then slipping back. Like a little turtle that kept pulling back into his shell. ;) It's all such a blur but I'm curious now what they could have done differently (so I know what to ask for next time ;)).

  • it really depends on your OB and if the babies are head down or at minimum baby A is head down.   some OB's will turn baby B if they flip after baby A is out...

My girls were both head down when my water broke unexpectedly at 34w3d.   My labor went extremely quickly, and both girls were out within 3.5 hours of me arriving at the hospital.  Because my girls were premature, my dr wanted to make sure I was progressing before giving me an epi.   Turns out I was progressing too quickly.  I went from 4cm's to 9 in about an hour and a half and anesthesia never got there in time.    Although, they were present in the OR (all twins are delivered in the OR regardless of Cesesaran or Vaginal...) incase I needed to be knocked out for an emergency C section.    At the time it was beyond awful...looking back, I'm very glad it happened like it did.

  • I did... my water broke on Baby A at 33 w 6 d.... they did try to stop it to give me a second steroid shot but I had the babies a couple hours later....  Labor wasn't too bad for me.  Babies were born 2 minutes apart.  I did have an epidural and that helped me so much.   It was quite amazing
  • My water broke at 35wk and I had a vaginal birth. My delivery was in the OR in case they had to switch to a c-section.  But all went well. As long as they are both head down you can have a vaginal.  And actually Baby B wasn't completely head down and the doctor turned him (not so fun but totally worth it).

I must say I was extremely lucky, I was on in the OR in delivering 2 babies for 45 minutes.

I had a vaginal birth @ 32 w when my water brok.  Both were head down and stayed head down.  I did have to deliver in the OR though in case they did have to do a c-section.  I pushed for less than 20 min total and my total time from water breaking to babies was 8 hrs.

My dr said full term for twins is 36w and that he wouldn't let me go past 38w.

present in the OR (all twins are delivered in the OR regardless of Cesesaran or Vaginal...)

That depends on your OB/hospital policy. I asked to deliver in the regular LDR room and my OB was fine with that. There was an OR team prepped and ready to go waiting outside in the hallway and the OR was just down the hall so the transfer could have been done quickly. I actually did a poll on another twin forum and found out more moms than I expected (at least 15%?) were also allowed to deliver their twins in a regular labor and delivery room.
