no, they are not necessary. we are getting a breathable bumper, because i don't want arms or legs getting stuck.

Definitely not needed. They're a suffocation hazard anyway unless you get the mesh kind. We had bumpers, and put them in the crib so it looked cute, but once our son started sleeping there we packed the bumpers up. It was basically a waste of money, unless you aren't concerned about suffocation.

I don't think they are necessary, but I do like them. And they do come in handy when your baby is rolling around a lot. My mom is making mine.
