Re: words of wisdom 0-6

  • I think bedding is the biggest waste of money. You shouldn't use the bumpers, the skirt is unnecessary and you can't use the quilt. So basically is $200 for cheap sheets. Such a scam.

  • So you just used sheets and the nursery blankets for the crib? I've never thought of using anything but bedding so this is a new direction for me.

  • Yikes! I'm going so cheap on this stuff. $200 for sheets? Uh no.
  • imagejenerally:

Just be warned though, if you opt to not spend the money on the kid's room, there are a whole bunch of blitches on 3rd Tri who will then accuse you of being selfish.

    You know who you are.?

  • I think for us, the nursery is an extension of our house.  The rest of the house is decorated so why just make the nursery a room of mismatched stuff.  With that being said, we painted the walls brown so that the room could be used in the future.

  • I plan on getting bedding. baby will use it on it's toddler bed but I not going buy expensive bedding though that's not worth it.

I appreciate the wisdom, but it's our first baby.  This is my only chance to go overboard with decorating the babe's room!  (I'm sure poor #2 will get the shaft in that department.)  I am just way too excited about this baby to have a simple nursery! I really do appreciate the post though.

  • We aren't going with a crazy theme - just brown and pink polka dots, and we aren't spending a ton of money. As far as bedding goes, we will use the bumpers until Camryn is pulling to stand (::gasp:: I know, go ahead and call Child Protective Services), the quilt will be going on the back of the glider to spruce it up a bit, and the skirt makes the crib look completed and have a cleaner look, IMO.??

  • I didn't read the post, but I can tell you I probably agree :)

DD's bedding was a gift. We used the skirt until we lowered DD's mattress. That's it. I guess the quilt is kind of on display hanging over the glider....

Bumper you shouldn't use, we got a breatheable one.
Sheet: cold and uncomfortable. We got the jersey ones to match the bedding we don't use. Much more comfy and not so cold in the winter.
I guess we do use the window thing, but I'm not sure if that came w/ of if it was separate... ?

For #2, I will be buying bedding accents (like the diaper hanger, light maybe, decor pillows) but definitely not a bedding set. I'll just get my ideas from the set I love and go from there, buying separates.

  • thanks for posting that link! I am so glad that I am not alone in thinking that all the decorating and bed sets can be a waste of time/$$$. Being in an apartment, I do wish that I could paint our son's room. My mom and I are doing some sewing and I have a few things to put on the wall, but none of it came from BRU,Target or PBK.

So what are you going to do? I'm trying to envision a nursery room without a bedding set.

I'm not at all trying to be snarky so please forgive me if it came off that way.

I agree with you Bro.  I guess people just have different opinions.  I personally love going into our nursery and looking at all of our cute bedding.

Just buy sheets. That's all you need. If you want a bumper, you can buy a breathable one that is safer than the ones that come with the sets.

you can get cute sheets at Target that cost a fraction of the price. We don't use blankets and we have a mesh bumper.

  • I have to agree. It is our first too and I already have everything planned out for decorating, and I don't care how much it cost...
  • When we found out that we were having a girl I started to look for all of my nursery stuff and everything that I found was so expensive. Then I realized how silly it was to spend that kind of money on stuff that LO will spit up on and who knows what else ... I just realized that I could take things overboard if I was not careful!

  • I have heard this from so many of my friends!  I am hoping to do a sage and chocolate brown room/bedding.  (We are not finding out the sex.)  I do want a quilt to use as an accent in the room, but otherwise I was just planning fitted sheets and a crib skirt.  I know the skirts are nothing but a PITA to most, but I do like them since I plan on storing things under it.  That is until I need to lower the mattress.  Thank you for this post!

Well - first let's say I'm slooooow in the nursery planning process, so I don't know for sure yet.  Second, I'm really not into "cutesy" baby themes.

I'm not going to use a bumper since it is unnecessary and potentially dangerous and I don't really want a quilt (thus making the bedding set a waste of money for me).  So, I will get some sheets and curtains that coordinate and perhaps a crib skirt.  I will still decorate the nursery, I just won't have a bumper or quilt.

    I'm building my own "theme".?

    I'm getting this: https://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vt_related_1&listing_id=24061159?

I'll hang this over the crib probably. I'll just get a separate sheet to match and a breathable bumper. I'll probably paint something from one of the cards on one of the walls. I'll make the kid a quilt. I know it's grandma will make an afghan and great grandma will also make a quilt so those will be in the room. They won't match I'm sure but I don't need another blanket in there just for asthetics.

  • We don't have a theme.  We are also not getting a bedding set.  Just a crib skirt and fitted sheets.  I can invision the nursery, and I'm excited for what it will look like...but I'm not going crazy on anything that's for sure.
  • Meh, I think its just a matter of what you wanna get into or not. You can buy bed skirts, sheets, quilts, etc., separately and they make a bunch of neutral stuff, so you don't have to get the bedding all-in-one just cause you want those things, kwim? On the theme spectrum I guess we do still have one but we aren't getting much from the style we chose: the mobile, hamper, bedskirt and wallart. I would like to also get the valances and lamp that go but those can easily by generic too of we don't feel like paying the extra $ for those in the end. I might give up on valances all together.

Plus both our moms are quilters so it wasn't necessary to buy another quilt.

all the stuff you will actually need and use, you can buy separately. The sheets (like I said above, you'll probably want the jersey kind anyway, much more comfy and less cold), you can buy a bed skirt separately, the diaper hanger usually needs to be bought on it's own, as well as all the cute accessories. The only thing you'll be missing out on is the quilt but most people don't hang it up anyway. It may end up on your glider, but that's not a big deal. And when DD moves to her toddler bed, we still won't be using it anyway. Too stiff.

I happen to totally disagree. The skirt can be used to hide extra storage space under the crib.  I believe in using a bumper (gasp!) because it keeps DD from sticking her arms and legs through the slats and hurting herself or pulling on the cord from monitor.  The quilt can be tacked up on the wall and used as a decoration.  My DD loves looking at the quilt above the changing table.

  • you can also make your own bedding if you are at all crafty

DD is 10 months old and has had severe acid reflux since she was 1 month.  Never once has she spit up on anything but the sheet.  Spitting up or even pooping on the bumber or the skirt would be next to impossible.

I'm glad we just registered for some sheets and a bumper. So much cheaper and a lot less unnecessary crap. We can use whatever items we want to decorate and don't have to worry about a "theme".

  • If you have the means, why not have a themed nursery. My DD loves her room. She is always in there. She likes to look at the ladybugs and flowers on her walls.

Lilypie Fourth Birthday tickersLilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • We will continue to live in our one-bedroom condo for the first year, so no nursery = no theme. Unless crib/changing table/computer and books is a theme.
  • I'm painting and making new curtains to spruce up the room and coordinate with the spare room bed which will stay in there.  My MIL made us a gorgeous quilt that coordinates.

So things will basically coordinate but nothing will be matchy matchy and the furniture is mostly hand me downs so it won't be all the same.  We live in an apartment so I figure when we move I'll just end up redecorating anyway.
