Lils & to the 20 year old 'ADULT' over on 3rd

Oh yes, a 20 year old is going to lecture me about my being selfish about choosing to get my hair done over buying useless baby crap the kid will A) never know s/he is missing and B) will end up in a landfill or over run my house.

Some people just don't have a bloody clue.

Nor does she fail to appreciate that at the age of 36, I can afford to buy a diaper bag that costs more than her entire nursery furniture in most instances.

If lurkers et al want to read a post and then go and start their own little conversation about it elsewhere, it's probably helpful to put the conversation into context.

There will be no plastic, over-sized, primary coloured toys allowed in our house. We don't believe in it nor do we feel that it is environmentally responsible for our child to play with this commercialized crap. The same way we try not to support Disney products either.

    This is SO effing true.

And I would think that being on TV, they don't exactly want you showing up with a shiity 15-dollar hackjob either.  Just one of the necessities of the job.

  • roflmao. Are you kidding me? I'm 23, and if I could afford that stuff, I'd prolly do it, too. You've put in your time and saved your money. I mean, it's not like your kid's gonna' starve while you're sittin' over there getting a mani-pedi, 1.5 hour massage, and your "hur did" while your child is chewing on his feet 'cause s/he's so hungry.

    *facepalm*

This reminds me - I think I need to book a hair appointment!!
  • a big fat Yes from me...

Where is this strikingly intelligent and worldly 20 y/o you speak of? I'd love to meet her :)

  • I say if you can afford it by all means go for it! If anything-you should be pampering yourself more now because pretty soon you might not have the time! I just spent a ton of money (for me that's just a few hundred) going out to eat and stuff in Seattle with my DH.  Sure, I could have bought diapers or whatever, but I figure there's plenty of time for that later-and who knows the next time we're going to be able to spend the whole day in the city with just the two of us?

  • I'm seriously laughing. Not at you, but at the fact that the fact I got my haircut today on a whim matters so much to anyone. Obviously, someone having a baby at 36 is going to have different ideas than someone having a baby at 20. The 20's and 30's are worlds apart. If you want to spend X amount of dollars, then I think that's great. It's your money and only you know your financial situation. For me, yes I could "afford" to spend my normal $80-100 but I chose not to. I don't think we should really compare and contrast each other.

    I PPH you Red. xoxo

  • Red's baby may be under-fed, in a diaper that hasn't been changed for a week, and has fleas.... BUT, she will look FABULOUS. Big Smile
  • I knew I liked you. When I started a baby registry I wrote in the notes that if anyone bought me something (especially toys) that they "thought" I needed I would either return it to the store, or donate it to charity. DH and I are not flexible on overly "pretty pretty princess" mentality for our little girl. (I made sure to register for nothing pink also) I will spend what little money I have on quality, useful items.

She's going to go into labour when she sees what I am prepared to spend on a diaper bag.

Now, if we were on 0-6 and you went and got the cheapy hair cut and she hacked it to death and you were suffering PPD I would be kicking your ass if you even entertained the idea of opting for the cheap follow up hair cut. See sometimes, it is a life or death situation.

Now, I'm not making fun of PPD but I've had family and friends who have suffered and something as simple as a bad hair cut can have drastic and horrific outcomes.

Buying plastic crap to string up in the backseat of your car and make it look like an ad for Fisher Price made in China with unknown substances added..... I see how that is so much better for the kid.?

We concur on the Princess Mentality. It will NOT happen in our household. I had to de-program DH's kids from the ENTITLEMENT mentality they were brainwashed with by their mother throughout their childhood.

Today, my almost 18 year old step son stained our exterior wood yard screen panels. He worked on them for 5-6 hrs straight. It was the first time in his entire life where he had to work that long, despite not wanting to do it.

A character building experience. He will be paid in cash for his efforts.?

I don't think everyone understands our banter, and often it comes off in a way not intended. We say things in dry sarcasm sometimes that doesn't come across on the board.

  • Whatever do you mean? I'm breastfeeding so I don't have to buy formula and save a bunch so I can afford to get my hair blown out weekly in addition to my 6 week updates.
  • btw...I'm a dark haired, 26 y/o pregnant woman who works full time...and is starting to sprout a few greys. You bet your A$S I will shell out the money to get my hair done.

If the baby had no food on the table, this would obviously be a different story. No reason to call child protective services on this one.

If you opt out of diapers, too, you can probably afford to keep up with the mani/pedis. You can learn to "sense" when Baby Red needs to go and run him/her to the potty.

But you've got to look good when you go to line up and get food stamps non??

  • Ha!  I spent $140 on my hair on Friday. I spent all that time school so that I could have the kind of job where I can afford the sort of lifestyle where I can spend that kind of money on hair if that's what I choose.

    PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!?

  • Unbelievable. ?I'm of the opinion that folks buy WAY too much stuff for babies and children, anyway. ?I'm hoping against hope to keep my small house as free of plastic, light-up, noisy crap as possible. ?(Now if only the grandparents would agree to get with that program . . . .)

Babies and toddlers are perfectly happy in the most basic of clothes, in a safe but simple crib, and, when the time comes for toys, they often love to play with the Tupperware-- or the box a pricey toy came in! ?The adorable outfits, status stroller, and high-end furniture?-- those things are definitely more for mom than baby.

(Nothing against anyone who loves adorable outfits or a gorgeous nursery, of course-- I plan to have both. ?But I recognize that's totally for my pleasure, not for the baby's.)?

Seriously, like Red is going to be Big Pimping a Cadi with 22s and dipping herself in couture while her baby starves.?

What's even sillier is the fact that in my OP, Red was making a comment in jest and it got completely twisted.

    RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOWHOOOO?

  • I love this post!!  I agree 100%.  My husband and I are fortunate to have great paying jobs and we are comfy so we haven't stopped treating ourselves.  We are also of the mindset that all a baby needs is mama's milk, a loving home and dedicated parents- we too are avoiding all the fancy toys and silliness.  Bravo!!

I really like how her post made it sound like Lily and/or Red were choosing to get their hair done OVER providing for their child. I guess being able to do both isn't an option for everyone...

    I agree with you, Redd.

It is almost disgusting how much unnecessary expensive crap there is these days. Walking into a BRU is truly overwhelming and commercialism at its finest. After two kids, I can guarantee that most moms will not use half the crap they register for, or just use it one time - which is a total waste.

I have red, textured, curly hair and trust me, there is no freaking way I'd ever let some out of school stylist at Supercuts touch it. If I paid retail for my cut and color, it would easily be in the $150 range at the Aveda salon I go to. Thankfully my best friend is a senior stylist and colorist there, so I pay her $20 because she's a love bug and knows things are tight financially, but great hair is a must!
