How much spit-up is too much?

EC is getting more and more reflux as time goes on.  Is there an amount/time that I should talk to my dr about it?  I use gripe water and mylicon when needed but it doesn't really affect the amt of spit-up.

And does it matter that sometimes it looks like cottage cheese and sometimes like new milk even though I just nursed her?

On a more humorous side, EC can hit DH's shirt no matter how many diaper cloths he has covering him - she can find even the smallest spot of exposed t-shirt!!  Stick out tongue

  • My pedi said don't worry about the amount of spit-up but if DS gets really upset, cries or arches while spitting up that we'd have to look into it.  All babies have some reflux...it's just a matter of how uncomfortable it makes them.  Sometimes DS spits up what I swear is a whole feeding but it doesn't phase him at all and he sleeps the same whether he's spit up a lot or a little so I guess he's getting what he needs.

  • I wouldn't worry about it unless she seems like she's in pain. Sometimes it would seem like Ethan would spit up EVERYTHING he just ate, but really a lot of it is saliva, etc. ?How it looks doesn't matter either. ?As time goes on she'll spit up less and less.

  • It always looks like more than it is, but since she is BF she really shouldn't be spitting up curdled milk.  Annie started doing it at about EC's age.  Over the course of a week she started spitting up more and more.  I called the dr after about 3 days and she puked 4 times in one day and she was becoming fussy.  We did positioning (kept up upright pretty much all day either when holding or in her swing/bouncy), but it didn't seem to help.  Dr gave her zantac and it has helped quite a bit.  After just a few doses she stopped throwing up.  She still has some spit up, but it is just milky looking and is usually right after she's eaten.

I hate to say that we've missed a few doses and we can always tell because she will throw up.

I was adamant that I wasn't going to leave the dr's without zantac.  I just couldn't stand the thought of her being in pain.
