Breast pumps for larger chested women

I have been doing some research trying to figure out which breast pump to get and have seen some mixed reviews for larger chested women.  I'm 23 weeks and already outgrowing my 40DDD bras so I was just curious if anyone has any pointers or what worked for them.  On that same note, where is the best place to get good nursing bras w/out paying a small fortune, it's hard now trying to find anything bigger in department stores.

  • I would ask a lactation consultant on the breast pumps, or ask this on 0-6, they might have some info.

     Check jms.com for bras.

  • I have the Medela PISA.  It's a great pump.  The pump shouldn't matter based on your breast size, I'm a DD.  But if the Pump Breast Shield/ Cup Horn is touching or hitting the nipple, you will want to move up in size.  The average size is 24 mm.  They sell them in the stores at BRU.  HTH.

I have found some good bras at JCP for less $, they can order larger sizes if you need them.  Check out the store to find the right fit you like first.

  • I used the Medela PISA and loved it. It's not necessarily the pump itself you need to worry about. The attachments which go on yourr breast (you know, the cone thingy) does come in a variety of sizes.

Check out your local LC or baby store, they should have a whole isle of pump accessories. Just to get an idea of who offers the size cone you will need.

Also, just because your breasts are bigger, are you saying your areola and nipple are larger too? If not, than the regular one will work. It only covers your areola and nipple.

    HTH.

  • In my opinion, your best bet is to get a pump that has a good motor in it.  That will ensure enough suction to draw your milk out.  I know Medela makes different sized breast shields for bigger/smaller breasts, so I think exploring which sheild will give you the most comfort is probably a better thing to look for.  I'd speak with a lactation consultant at your local hospital for information on sizing.

  • I don't know if you have this store near you but I found some bigger size bras at Ross (it's like a TJ Maxx or a Marshall's), they were all $6 and under and bonus...they even had nice colors/pattens, I don't know about you but I get bored in white, black and beige.

  • I was just fitted for a bra on Friday.  It was a 36G and even maternity stores don't carry bras that large in stock,

I ended up having to go to Nordstroms to get fitted.  Their bras are expensive, but atleast I know my size now.  I'll have to order less expense ones online.

  • I just wanted to say that I take some comfort in knowing that someone else has to wear a 40 DDD.  I can't imagine how big they are going to get when I'm breast feeding.  Stick out tongue

I agree.  I used this with DS 5 years ago and will be using it again.  I was a 36 DD pre-preg and never had an issue.

  • I can't figure out why breast size makes a difference for which pump you use?  There are different shields you can buy that depend on nipple size, but that's it.
