easy going mom says "over her dead body"

so I love the name "Dalilah Jalown M...." and my moms okay with the Jalown because that's my middle name but she hates Dalilah, what do ya'll think or do you have any good suggestions that are unique without being weird?

Why is your middle name Jalown?  How do you pronounce it?  Did your mom make it up or does it have significance?

Dalilah is spelled incorrectly (not sure if you are doing that on purpose).  It also has a negative Biblical implication, but I don't think it's a bad name.  Dahlia, Daria, and Davida could also work.

this is a little random but here's some that are lower on the popularity list:

  • Jalown was my mom's best friend's name and her mom made it up, it's pronounced ja-lawn, and i acutally like the biblical meaning behind "Delilah" she may have betrayed samson but she was beautiful and intelligent, but that's kinda why i changed it from "Delilah" to "Dalilah"
  • I do not care for Delilah or Dalilah.?

  • Sorry, I'm not a fan of Dalilah either. It looks like it is spelled incorrectly to me.

I have a negative association because of the biblical Delilah (name means weak/poor in Hebrew, was one of the most famous treacherous temptresses of all time & betrayed her husband) and the cheesy radio personality with the same name.

What about just Lilah/Lila instead of Delilah? Similar names on nymbler were...

Laila/Layla, Chloe, Seraphina, Leah, Juliet, Delia, Darby, Lorelai, Lilith (Lili), Genevieve, Norah, Sadie, Sophia, Cora, Adeline, Lucy, Lydia, and Anya.

  • We have friends who just named their baby Delilah.  I think it's cute, and she's an adorable baby.  It's nms, but I think if you love it you should go with it.  Your mom will get used to it.  GL!

  • Delilah is ok, but you spelled it wrong and truthfully, it doesn't reflect well on you.

I don't understand why your mom even has a say in what you're naming your child?

  • I spelled it the way i did because i want it pronounced dah-lye-lah and not dee-lye-lah
  • I've never heard anyone pronounce it "dee-li-lah." Ever.
  • The correct spelling is also pronounced dah-lye-lah (like the song) and not dee-lye-lah.

I recommend the traditional spelling because if you go with a made-up spelling, it will be spelled wrong every time someone tries to spell it.  Also, it doesn't change the pronunciation at all.

Ditto. Delilah has always been pronounced "duh-lie-luh." Ever heard the Delilah show on the radio?

  • I think Delilah is lovely. Never heard Jalown, but it's nice.
  • You seem pretty happy with your spelling so this may not matter to you, but when I read your post the first time I read the name as Dahlia (like the flower and the '40s murder case). Just something to keep in mind if you are going to change up the spelling.

As a Christian, Delilah will alway be negative in my mind. I can't help it. What Emma wrote is true. I think it's almost as bad a naming your child Lilith.?

  • I had a friend who spelled her name like that but she pronounced it Dah-lee-luh.

hate the misspelling of delilah, i think it's fine as it is. i read that jalown is your mn but i still don't like it. it's made up and it doesn't sound pretty. go with delilah or just lila if you like that.

I think it's pretty funny that your mom has a problem with Delilah but is ok with that middle name, which I am sorry but IMO is just awful.  I like Delilah although spelled the proper way, not the way you had it, and I would stand your ground if that is the name you like.  Your mom is entitled to her opinion but this is not her child!
  • What about Delia instead? Just a suggestion.  If you like the way you spell the name, then I guess it's not always the best idea to ask on this forum as you'll get a lot of varying opinions. I work in a school and we have students with names of various spellings, and it's a nonissue. Go for it if you like it. Your mom will just have to get used to it.

  • seriously?  I love Delilah!  it's the Jalown part that threw me.
  • I like Delilah, but please don't misspell it in hopes of making it unique.  This is a pet peeve of mine.  It really won't change the pronounciation.
