I would recommend that any first time parent register, regardless of whether you are an adoptive or biological parent. Registering is very fun, and it helps you get things you need. If you feel uncomfortable "asking" for gifts, then the registry is at least a good way to help organize your list and check off the things you need as you buy them yourself.
I just thought about this, but if you are adopting an older child, you could register at a place like Target for bedding, furniture, toys, and other necessities. There is no rule that says registering is for new parents of babies only!
I know you didn't ask about this, but I wanted to throw in my two cents.
If you DO register, just keep your DH under control with the scanner gun. My husband started acting like James Bond with the scanner. He was scanning the ceiling, the floor, people walking by and even me! When I got home, I checked the registry online. He had accidentally registered for almost everything in that particular aisle at BRU. It took me quite a while to go through and delete everything. It was pretty funny though.

I would have laughed if I had seen your husband doing that. At least he was enjoying himself!
