Parenting after a Loss

NBR: No School Today...

And not because of swine flu.

On Tuesday night my school was broken into.  They were able to get everything cleaned up and back to normal before kids got there in the morning yesterday, but I think staff was a bit shaken.  There were ransacked classrooms and broken glass.  I was definitely shaken a bit.  My classroom was the point of entry for a break in a couple of years ago and I'd felt so violated then.  Walking in yesterday brought back a lot of those feelings.

This morning I got a phone call from the principal saying that we were broken into again and this time there is some serious vandalism to take care of, so we can't have students.  I think she knew how upset staff got yesterday because she's giving us the day off, too.  Usually, she'd make us come in for a teacher work day, so this must be really bad.

I'm already scheduled to have tomorrow off so DH can go into a meeting at work.  I'm going to give them a few hours to work on the vandalism and get things calmed down before I go up to school with Allie with my "day off tomorrow" excuse to 1) check my classroom and my stuff and make sure that everything is OK there and 2) get sub plans together.  I really hope my stuff and my kids' stuff is OK.

In the 4 years I've worked at this school, we've had serious robberies (computers, cars, A/V equipment) at least 8 times.  I forget sometimes what a bad neighborhood I work in.  For me, really, the saddest part is that this is where my kindergarten babies live and this is the kind of stuff that makes up their idea of normal.

  • That really stinks. I hope things aren't to bad when you head in there. Poor little kiddies.?

  • That's really scary! I hope all your stuff is okay!
  • I'm really sorry to hear that.  I'm a teacher too and can't imagine how I would feel if someone went through all my things that I have here.
  • How scary.  You work at a charter school, right?  My mom has worked in 2 (St. Louis and Cinci) and both were in really tough neighborhoods.  Cars got broken into a lot, but never the school.  That is just ridiculous.
  • Oh, that stinks.  We often don't think of our classrooms/offices as "ours" until something like this happens.  It IS a violation, and I can understand how you feel--it's not that different than someone breaking into your home, because you are trying to make it a happy, safe place.  Big hugs to you and all of your kids.  I hope the excitement of a day off completely overshadows any fears that they might have.
  • What is wrong w/people I am so sorry that happened.
  • people suck.  just sayin'.
