What is Kate a nn for?

I know it can stand on its own, but I'm wondering what name is shortened to Kate.  Katherine?  Kathleen?

DH suggested Kate as a possible girl's name last night, and it's really growing on me.

Kaitlin, Kathleen and Katherine. I like it as a stand alone name.

We loved Kate (on it's own... I'm not into nicknames) but my whorish MIL is named Kathleen, goes by Kathy... but when she heard we liked Kate she screamed with glee "ooooohhhhh after me"   Ummm.... F to the NO.

She ruined it for me... Not the name (I LOVE IT) but using it IF we have a girl.

I would go for it on it's own. It's a great name.

Can be shortened from Katherine, Katelyn. GL

I agree with you-it's short for Katherine/Catherine or Kathleen.

It's cute on its own as well, though I prefer Katherine/Catherine.?

    Other ideas not mentioned yet:

    Katrina

    Kathlyn

    Katie

    Pretty much any K-a-t name.

I love Caitlin, with Katie for short (or Kate). That's my "second" girl's name, after Lucy!

I prefer Kate as a stand alone name. It's very chic and classic. But if I had to choose, I'd go with Katherine.

it can be for a variety of names. katherine is probably most common but also (according to baby name wizard) kaitlyn, kathleen, katia (i've heard it pronounced something in between kasha and katja), katarina, kateri, katrina. i personally like katherine or kathleen.

Over the past few months I've really been drawn to the name Katelyn.  Since finding out the gender yesterday, I'm REALLY loving it.

I really like the nn of Katie for a little girl, once she got older, Katelyn sounds more mature, yet sweet.  It would be her choice though.

I can't think of any other suggestions that haven't been made but wanted to put in a personal vote for Kate as a stand alone name. But I could be biased :-)

Could be Katrina, but that would go more to Kat.

I love it with a C, honestly. ?Cate is super cute. ?I have a friend named Caitlyn who goes by Cait or Caitie.?
