Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Thrush question....

How can you tell if your baby has thrush?  I know they get white spots on their tongue....but how do you know if the white is just from formula, or if it is thrush??  The reason I ask is because DS has been unusually fussy for the last few days and he has white on his tongue (but once again, it could be from his formula). How do I know?  TIA for your help.

Re: Thrush question....

  • There would be white patches other than on his tounge, and you wouldn't be able to wipe them off with your finger or a cloth.

  • Formula will wash away, thrush won't - and it will get more and more pronounced.   You will probably also notice it in other areas like the inside of the cheek, roof of the mouth etc.

  • And it's not uncommon to also have diaper rash as well - the same yeast will often affect the "down there" area for the baby.

  • I thought you could only get thrush from BFing, IDK.
  • If it is just milk it will wipe off easily.  If it doesn't, it is thrush.

i bf and i asked my doc if once we stopped eventually would we not have to worry about thrush. and she said baby can still get thrush from using pacifiers, burp clothes etc.  or anytime the baby takes antibiotics
