over this swine flu thing. If I hear of ONE case in Florida I am leaving my job and going home and not leaving my house. I was reading about it online and the part that got me was "the swine virus may kill pregnant women and their fetus"..yay-- freaking out now!! There was a Mexican man in Orlando over the weekend who is in an Orlando hospital right now being tested for it, if it comes back a yes I'm outta here!!!!!
Re: I'm totally freaking myself out..
Try not to worry too much about it. Wash your hands often and make DH do the same.
I'm major OCD (not an exaggeration) I completely shower after doctor's appointments bc it's in a hospital. So maybe you want to do that since you're near lots of sick people.
There is a thread about this on BOTB. It might help reassure you.
Don't forget that the basic-everyday-flu kills people every year, too.
Actually today was the 1st confirmed death from swine flu in the US. A little boy in Texas.
cnn.com:
The toddler was a Mexican citizen who had gone to Houston, Texas, for treatment, said Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the Houston Department of Health and Human Services.?
I'll be staying posted on the Orlando thing, since I'm in Florida too! My problem is, I'm not any better at home than I am at work b/c DH is an elementary school teacher, where germs are a plenty! He already got pink eye a few weeks ago, and you should have seen the lengths we went through to keep me from getting it.
the baby who died in texas was a MEXICAN citizen who came here for medical care, not a US citizen. ?as far as most physicians are concerned, there are still no deaths in the US.
i work in a pediatric emergency room. ?people are absolutely FREAKING OUT and it is semi-ridiculous. ?the media is absolutely blowing things out of proportion. ?obvs, i'm trying to reassure you, but unless a direct contact of yours has it and is coughing/sneezing etc., all over you, you're probably fine. but i know how easy it is to freak out!
ETA: there will probably be some deaths in the US, but most people will recover from this absolutely fine. ?a few days of flu symptoms, and then gone. ?and i know it's terrifying to read that it can kill your baby, but frankly, so can the real flu (and actually, far more common!)!
i'm so sorry if this sounds harsh -- i'm trying to reassure you, and i'm tired of my workplace!?
I'm still sticking to my logic. One person versus thousands. I'm going to wash my hands often and not freak out yet.
He also had an underlying health condition which probably contributed to his death. Unhealthy people, the elderly and people with chronic conditions are more susceptible to the common flu as well.
He was visiting Texas from Mexico. He wasn't living in Texas if that matters.
I agree with your logic - that is the only thing keeping me sane. ?I was just pointing out that I still don't consider there being any US deaths from it. ?
Actually, there is a big difference between this and the regular flu. It spreads a lot quicker, is more deadly, and is immune to a lot of the typical flu-fighting mechanisms. Not trying to freak people out more, but just inform.
Deep Breath...
The "regular" flue kills 35,000 people in the US a year. The swine flu has killed only one person so far.
The media is trying to freak everyone out. Just turn off the news.
Where did you get this information? The CDC webpage says that in the US the spread and the severeness of this flu is similar to the common flu. And it is highly treatable with two of the most common antiviral medications. And I have heard no news reports saying anything close to what you are referring to.
The reason they are scared is that they have never seen this strain before, so they are being cautious. That's all.
The little boy was from Mexico seeking treatment in TX so really no Americans have died yet. Still sad though.
