Weaning from paci?

Ok, I know y'all haven't been here yet, but P is so attached to his paci (understatement).  Here are my thoughts on weaning...which do you think would work?

1).  Going to the store and letting him pick out a special toy and "pay" with his pacis.

2).  Having the paci fairy come in the middle of the night and taking them away and leaving a prize.

3).  Cut the tip off little by little until there is nothing left and he (hopefully) becomes disinterested.

4).  Be a mean mommy and go cold turkey.

  • I don't think babys/toddlers can quite wrap their minds around paying with pacis. They'll have the toy and still wonder where their paci is.

Option 2 doesn't sound that bad.

Option 3 doesn't sound that bad either.

Option 4 would probably cause more of a headache.

I have heard really good things about weaning them off slowly during the day so they only need it at bedtime. Then slowly wean them off the bedtime paci.

  • Oh and yeah I have zero experience those are just MHO.
  • He is already only using it for naps/bedtime, but he does still "ask" for it during the day/evening.

  • Oh that's good! I didn't know that you were already that far into weaning. I know some people who don't even start weaning off pacis until the toddler is 3!!

I didn't look at your ticker beofre posting. Maybe for his 2nd bday you collect all his pacis and try to explain to him that big boys don't need these and he should "donate" them to a baby. Then he gets an awesome "big boy" bday present???

  • Hmm, haven't thought of that.  Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Again, I have had no experience with this but I have always heard/witnessed/read that it is best to go cold turkey with an association that paci's belong to babies.  By gathering the pacis and donating them to a baby that he can see (knowing the baby wont use them) so that he knows baby=paci and that since he is a big boy now he doenst need the.  No clue if that works but that is what everyone I know did.  Took about a week but after that it was ok.

This is exactly what my stepmom did with my youngest brother (who was super attached to his), and it worked well. ?
