If you've been to the Outer Banks, please come in...

We're looking at going there for a week in May, even if the water's too cold.  Where did you stay?  It looks like there are a lot of beach houses, but not many hotels - is there a good place to rent a house from?  Is there anything to do there other than hang out on the beach and go to lighthouses?  Any other great advice about the area?

  • I'm going in June for the 1st time and we are staying in an area called "Duck"

  • Last September we went to Avon in the Outer banks.  We rented a house from surf or sound realty and they were easy to deal with and I'd rec them.

  • I love the Outer Banks!!  We used to go every year growing up for our summer vacation.  We only just stopped because my parents retired to Florida.  We always went to Avon and loved it but the Kitty Hawk area has more things to do especially if you're going in May when the water is too cold.  Make sure you're within walking distance (at least).  Also, we loved the trip down to Ocracoke every year.  You have to take a ferry across but it's a fun day trip and the beaches used to be amazing.  The last time we went (about 6 years ago), we got a last minute rental on the sound for next to nothing ($600 for the week - 60% off).  I can't remember the name of the company we always used but I can ask my mom if you'd like.  Most companies down there, though, are pretty good.  email me if you want more info - erin at erinkathleen dot com.
  • Thanks so much for the info!  The only time we've ever rented a house was in St John, so it's all new to me.  Do you think this would be a fun place to go with a toddler and a baby (and probably my sister, too)?

  • I went to Duck... it was amazing! I really recommend going... I don't know of any hotels, though. We stayed at a big beach mansion with a bunch of our friends' nuclear families - each family pays for one room, so everyone pitches in. There was a pool on the deck overlooking the beach, and wild horses would come wandering right up to the house... it was wonderful. We had kids there of every age, and everyone had a good time.
  • OBX is VERY family friendly, it's not as busy as a beach like Myrtle, but we prefer this. Lots of restaurants and nice beaches. There's an aquarium (small) too if you have a non-beach day. We have been going for years and love it.
  • Oh and we're in N Virginia too and it's an easy drive. We usually leave early on Sat, I'd rather wait to get into our rental down at the beach, vs. sitting on 95 for hours on end.
