Adoption

educating family members

whether you are in process or already have adopted, what books did you find best to help "educate" your family on the process. Both of our families are so supportive of us and the process, and ask questions that sometimes we can't even answer. Either for our own lack of knowledge and just getting started, we haven't experienced it yet or i think in some cases we will almost learn together.

We would never ask that they read anything unless they wanted to, but knowing both of our moms, they are bound to. My sister as well will most likely ask.

Re: educating family members

  • Great question! I really liked The Idiots guide to Adoption. I would like to have my mother-in-law read it but don't know how to approach her. I mean, like you said only if she was interested and I know she will be. I'm reading Adoption for Dummies too, I would suggest both of those.

  • My MIL was very curious and asking tons of questions also, so I loaned her my Adoption for Dummies. She really enjoyed learning more and it has opened up some great conversations.

It is not an information book but I also love the Chicken Soup for Adoption.

    Good Luck,

  • The Open Adoption Experience was really informative about open adoption if you're headed that way
  • This is a really great question.  We didn't have family read anything completely, but as we were reading The Whole Life Adoption Book, and The Connected Child, we've been passing on what we've been learning,
  • As soon as we told my MIL, I gave her our copy of Adoption for Dummies. And ordered a copy for my parents.
