Yesterday I met an 18 year old girl who has two kids aged 16 months and 6 months. Two different dads, she's no longer involved with either father and now she's dating someone new.
We got to talking about babies. She told me that she uses the only OB in town that doesn't accept Medicaid (only private insurance) and that she wouldn't see anyone else because she prefers to not be sitting around a waiting room with "those" people.
In the course of conversation she also mentioned that she lives in gov't subsidized housing, her kids are on state insurance, and she recieves WIC. It was all I could do to keep a straight face and not fall out of my chair laughing. The irony of it was just too great. I wanted to say to her, "Honey, YOU are "those" people."
(Disclaimer: I'm not judging anyone who is on Medicaid, WIC or any other form of assistance- I'm glad those programs are there for those who need them. I just thought it was funny in this particular context.)
