Multiples

Is there a specific book on how to....

breatsfeed multiples? I'd like to at least put forth the effort to breastfeed and/or pump but have no clue how it would all work. I know I'll need to supp. for calories which is fine with me. Has anyone else done this with triplets? Thanks for all of your help. You ladies are a such a life saver. -Marcie

Re: Is there a specific book on how to....

  • I'd try Mothering Multiples. Lots of info on positioning, getting started, etc. Of course, it is a La Leche book, so it sort of goes with the supplementing is a big nope. Well, realistically I've found that you can supplement and breastfeed BOTH - and I'm still nursing at 14 months. So, take some of it with a grain of salt.

Definitely has some great information there.

  • I also read mothering multiples... and thought it was good... but then I had trouble breastfeeding and since the book made it seem like ANYONE can breastfeed twins I ended up with a huge amount of guilt for supplementing.  It made me feel like there must be something wrong with me that I couldn't make enough milk for my babies.

So yes, it's a good book for helping you to see what could be possible.  But definitely don't take it all as the absolute truth.  I did and it made me very very sad.

  • I would recommend Mothering Multiples. Also, I think that surrounding yourself with resources (Lactation Consultant, La leche league, and a pedi with a lactation consultant) is very important.  I would definitely recommend attending a LLL meeting before your little ones arrive.
