Where to discard unused Rx meds?

Since certain meds shouldn't be flushed down toilet or thrown out... do I just take 'em to any pharmacy? Or what?
Nutmeg, cilantro, sage, mint, thyme... these are a few of my favorite things! Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest! We have four children; one left us too soon.

Re: Where to discard unused Rx meds?

  • I give them to a pharmacist friend of mine. She knows which ones are ok to donate (and has the proper channels to do that). Some pharmacies can provide unused (seal in tact on the actual tablets) medicines to homeless shelters etc.

Otherwise, she can throw them in the chemical hazards bin.

  • You can take them back to the pharmacy. I wouldn't flush them because then they end up in the streams, lakes and drinking water (even though they are treated).

Pharmacies cannot take back unused meds.

Keep them in the original container.  Remove your name from the label.  Add water to the container.  Place it in a coffee can or other, larger container, with coffee grounds or kitty litter.  Seal the container and put out with your garbage.  As for inhalers, patches, etc., check with the manufacturer or your pharmacy.
