Fifth's Disease

Friday a student at my school was diagnosed with Fifth's Disease, and I'm hoping to get my blood results back tomorrow. Until Friday, I wasn't aware that Fifth's can be dangerous in the first trimester if exposed. Any good thoughts would be appreciated!

I don't have the symptoms, although last year I'm pretty sure I had Fifth's, which means I may get a false positive anyway. And regardless, there is nothing that can be done except to monitor things more closely. I'm pretty sure I wasn't in contact with the student, so I'm just anxious to get the blood report back tomorrow.

That being said, I'm thankful I even found out as the office didn't know I was even pregnant so they didn't notify me. Thank goodness for gossip! Now, however, my news is out. I'm hoping that my bloat doesn't give me away to my kids until the end of the year!?

Re: Fifth's Disease

  • One of my Sunday school students had it this winter.  I was tested twice and the results showed that I had not been exposed but also that I was not immune because I had never had it before.  I was told to try my best to avoid any future exposure (not easy when you teach Sunday school every week!)

If you had it last year then I think you should be fine.  Even if you didn't, apparently not everybody who is exposed catches it.  I hope your results are good!

  • Hopefully you weren't exposed, and that you are immune.
