Anyone's water break early?

My sister is 28 weeks pregnant and her water just broke. They are on their way to the hospital right now. She asked me what was going to happen and I didn't know. Has this happened to anyone? What do they do? I'm scared. :(

Re: Anyone's water break early?

  • I've seen on Discovery shows where this has happened and sometimes, they are able to keep from delivering immediately.  So, she'll either deliver a teeeeny weeeeny baby or she will be admitted and on very strict bedrest with IV's obviously and will wait as long as they possibly can before delivering, which may not end up being very long.

You all are in my thoughts...I hope everything goes well.

  • My water broke at 34 weeks.  This sounds dumb now, but I didn't even think that was what it was since it was so early, and I went back to bed.  I only leaked when I had to go to the bathroom so I thought I was losing bladder control.  So by the time I got to the hospital, I was 5 cm dialated and 100% effaced.  I gave birth not long after that.  Good luck to your sister, I'll be keeping her and her baby in my thoughts.

  • I think it depends.  I know that a guy in my office, his wife's water broke super early, and they kept her in the hospital on bedrest for a long time before delivering the baby.  I'll say a prayer for your sister and her baby!

  • I'm not sure, but I think there is a huge risk for infection after 24 hours of the water breaking.

Did it actually break or is it leaking?

I hope it all turns out okay!

  • me - at 33 weeks.  I was in active labor and they didn't even attempt to stop it.  At 28 weeks though, they might try to stop labor and keep her in the hospital on strict bedrest with antibiotics through an IV.  If they can't stop the labor, then she'll obviously have a preemie.  There are lots of moms with 28 weekers on the preemie board.
  • GL to her. ?Some of the moms on the premie board have incredible stories about their water breaking early. ?:)

  • My water broke at 36 weeks so they went ahead and induced me because I was already at the point where my OB was not concerned about delivering early. My understanding is that if your water breaks too early that they would not *have* to have you deliver the baby, that they could "refill" you and give you antibiotics. I would think this would include staying in the hospital til the baby is ready to come out but could be wrong.
  • If you haven't already, I would post this question on the preemie board.  I will say a prayer for your sister & the baby!
