I'm sure most of you have read about it, but ?I absolutely swear by it. ?It helps my daughter almost instantly. ?My husband thought I had put it into her head, so she only THINKS it helps so it does (even when she's sleeping...um, OK). ?But my 1-y-o son has had a cough for a couple of days. ?My dr. OK'd using the real vicks vaporub (not the babyrub) on him, so I put it on his chest a couple of nights ago. ?No good...he kept coughing. ?Later that night, I rubbed it on his feet, slipped on some socks and PRESTO. ?Gone. ?Ditto at naptime today. ?I hardly think I "convinced" my 1 y-o that it should work. ?Of course, my husband now thinks it's "coincidence".
?Another remedy that has helped my daughter is honey/lemon. ?The dr. put her on all kinds of meds (claritin, zyrtec, singulair). ?I googled side effects and of course, it returned all these scary results. ?I googled a few sites that recommended honey/lemon, so??we tried that, and it works like a charm, at least on minor (but hers was persistent and minor) coughs, i.e. allergies. ?We had to go in with the Vicks a couple of a weeks ago when she had a more viral/cold cough thing, but otherwise, we haven't had to use any OTC or prescription drugs on her since. ?It's just about 1/2 c. honey, 1/4 c. water (to thin it) plus juice from one lemon. ?Also, she LOVES her "special lemonade" versus all those drugs!
?ETA: I give her ~2 tsp per night of the lemon/honey mixture (not the whole thing!) ?I just refrigerate the rest.
?HTH!?
Re: Vicks on feet for cough
it definitely works!
lemon slices on the soles of your feet work well too. for cough, you can slice up some onion (thinly) and add to a generous amount of honey...refrigerate and the next day you have a great natural remedy for cough. as nasty as it sounds it's actually not bad (onion has properties that draw out cold & cough).
i've stayed away from the vicks b/c of the camphor but the babyrub works pretty well.
The real Vicks on the bottoms of the feet works well (baby Vicks...not so much). I never put the real Vicks on the chest though.
The other pp about the onion syrup is also good...although my Mom would dice up the onion put it in a glass, put some sugar on it and turn the glass upside down in a little bowl. You get a syrupy mixture. I bet honey on it would be even better!
