Baby Names

Juliet or Jane

DH and I love the name Juliet. But obviously that opens up a world of Romeo/Juliet jokes. WDYT?

Also, my mom's name is Jane. I love that name. Is it too weird for my mother and daughter to have the same name? Is it confusing?

Re: Juliet or Jane

  • I like them both.

If you go with Jane, I don't think it's weird that it's your mom's name. We do it with boys all the time so we should be able to do it with girls, too.

    GL!

  • I think both names are pretty.  I prefer Jane, and I don't think that it's weird if baby & grandma have the same name.  You could call her by a nn, Janie or by a middle name

My friend named her daughter after her mom.  Elena but they call the baby Lanie or baby E

  • ?I love Juliet, but I really like naming a baby after a family member, so Jane works too. ?My best friend, who is my mom's best fiend's daughter, was named after her grandmother. ?It has occasionally been confusing, sometimes I have to ask mom, which one are you talking about. ?But I don't think it's weird at all. Likely no one would even ask that question if you were considering naming the baby after your father.?
  • I would go with Juliet

    I agree with this.

  • And I love your first daughter's name, so I bet you do well picking this one, too. :)
  • I love the name Juliet, although DH wouldn't go for it.  In your situation for a first name I'd choose Juliet and for a middle name I'd go with Jane to honor your mother, but I probably wouldn't go with Juliet Jane.  If you wanted to do Jane as a first name that would be fine too ... not weird at all for your mother and daughter to have the same name.
  • I like both names, but lean towards family names more, so I vote for Jane.

As pp have said, its not weird to name after your mom, its an honor.

    I agree with this.

Me too.  We tend to think of Jane as so common, but it isn't used as a first name so much anymore.

  • I think Juliet is a beautiful name. Very elegant and current, but not overly trendy. I like it.

I'm so-so on Jane. Don't love it or hate it. I do think it's sweet for you to give your daughter your mom's name, though.

  • I much prefer Juliet.  I actually think Juliet Jane sounds nice.

I really love them both, but prefer Juliet. It was our #1 name until Dh and I fell in love with Caroline.?
  • Juliet is my top name choice if I ever have another girl.  I like Jane, too, and don't see a problem with grandma and granddaughter with the same name.
  • Both are nice names. I like Juliet better.

    This?

  • It would be sweet for your daughter to be named for grandmother. Also Jane is so much more uncommon for her age group.

Juliet sounds very pretty, but her character commits suicide. Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful story, but it's a tragedy. In a similar way I would not want to be named after Ophelia from Hamlet.?

And at some point, your daughter will read the play in school.....I don't know, it seems odd to me, and like there could ?be jokes.?

One alternative no one has suggested yet is Julia. Just throwing that out there. I'm partial as it was my grandmother's name, but it's very pretty and similar (nd not common).?

  • I like Juliet. I wouldn't worry about the Shakespeare associations
