Worth it to get an Ergo at 6 months?

I have heard so many rave reviews about this and I like that you can wear it on your hip unlike the Bjorn. But Natalie will be 6 months next week and she is our last... we have a Bjorn and 3 other cotton slings (K'Tan, Hotsling, and ring sling) all of which we use. I always feel like she is going to fall out of the slings though b/c she is so active and leans and wiggles all over. The Bjorn is the only one I really feel secure with, and like I said it is just a front carrier. I did pay a lot for it though. Ergo owners of babies older than 6 months - help!

Re: Worth it to get an Ergo at 6 months?

  • Not too late. Ergos are great for toddlers IMO, but I don't really like them for infants. I carried my son in his Ergo from about 1-3 y/o.
  • I debated back and forth for a month or 2 also...and my DS is almost 13 months!!! But I caved in and got one. We love it. DS...DH..and ME!!! We have a bjorn which we loved also...but it was killing our backs. The ergo is very comfortable. You can always look on craigslist...I know here in NY it's sells so fast on craigslist. You can always sell it also :)

  • I didn't buy mine until S outgrew the Bjorn. I think it's actually better for larger/older kids. Definitely worth it!
  • DD was loving her Ergo until 17 months or so, which is when DH started using it rather than me (due to my pregnancy). It seems like this may have to do a bit with DH having a wider frame than me and her having to sit more splayed out on his back. I've read others saying that it continued to work great well past 2.
  • I wear my 3 year old in it, and my 13m old.  They are good up to and above 40lbs and are totally comfy because the weight sits on your hips instead of lower back & shoulders like the bjorn (which we also have).  We don't bother with hip carry, mostly back, some front.  Love the thing, DH loves it, I'm short & fat, DH is tall & average, fits us both perfectly.
  • I didn't buy mine until my ds was almost a year old and feel like I got my money's worth.  In fact, he will be three in July and I still use it when we go tot amusement parks (we do Disneyland often because we live about 30 minutes away and have an Annual Pass).  We park our stroller in one area of the park, I put him in the Ergo on my back and then we walk around that area, wait in lines, etc. with him in the Ergo.  He gets overwhelmed at places like amusement parks that are overly crowded and likes to be carried a lot so the Ergo totally saves my back.
  • A soft carrier for an older infant and toddler is ideal! :)

While I liked my ergo, I'd also encourage taking a peek at the Beco Butterfly, especially if you're using it with a younger child (6mo).

The Beco has built-in infant and child inserts, so it's easier to adapt to your child's specific size.  Also I LOVE the built-in interts b/c you can easily put your child in the carrier, then lift them up onto your front/back safely (I always struggled with the back carry and the ergo b/c I couldn't get DS on my back w/o it feeling like he was going to fall).  I also found it easier to adjust for a custom, comfy fit.  Prettier fabrics from which to choose, IMO, too :)

tendercargo.com has some great info in their blog (and good customer service if you buy from them).

  • Also, if you are done having kids, Ergos sell for some good cash used on cragislist.com.  So you can recoup some of the costs when she outgrows it.  Also, it goes up to 40 pounds (unlike the bjorn which is 25).  My ds is 31 pounds and I am still comfortable carrying him -- and I am a small girl at only 5'2".
  • Absolutely!! I did not get mine until DD was 10 mos old and I used it for her a ton. I use it more for my nine month old these days, but my almost three year old still rides in it occasionally. She rode in it regularly until she was two and DS was born.

  • I just read through the other posts. If you consider the Beco they have them at Sprout Soup on High street so you can try before you buy. Buy, Buy Baby at Easton also carries Ergos and you can use the BBB 20% off coupon.
