Anyone use breast shields?

DS wasn't latching well so the lactation consultant suggested I use the nipple shields, which work great! I couldn't believe how easily ds latched on. Now I'm wondering how long I should wait before I start to wean him from them. I also think I need a larger size shield b/c my nips are super sore now!

I'd love to hear your experiences...thanks ladies

Re: Anyone use breast shields?

  • I used them for the first several weeks. Aren't they a life-saver!!??

After a while, I would let DD nurse with it on for a few minutes, then slide it out after my nipple was a little more 'formed' in the shape of the shield. Eventually, she didn't need the shield anymore.

  • We're still using one for almost all feeds, but for every feed i try to have a little time either at the beginning or the middle of a session where I try to get him to latch on without. ?It's worked a couple of times.?
  • Oh i know...a total lifesaver!  I'd try to get him on breast only sooner rather than later, DS got so used to the shield he was almost 3 mo before we could regularly go without.  And don't believe the crap about it preventing baby from getting enough milk, some women HAVE to use it the entire duration of nursing!
  • DD will not stop using the shield, I only used it for about 10 days before I started weaning her and she would never do it. If you can't wean her from it don't stress, it's annoying to use but you'll get used to it.
