3rd Trimester

Heartburn (semi-vent)

How is everyone else coping with this? I've NEVER had heartburn before this baby, and never before 3rd tri hit, so I've been pretty lucky. But now the reflux is so bad it's waking me up in my sleep and leaving me with such a sore throat in the morning. Sorry to vent, sleep is already hard enough these days without one more discomfort KWIM? Guess I'll send DH to the store for some tums and zantac...

Re: Heartburn (semi-vent)

  • I eat Tums like they're candy.

    I never had heartburn before, ever, either. It sucks.

  • I was the same way, never had hb before pregnancy! And it wakes me up a few nights a week! I take Prilosec cause nothing else worked! GL!
  • start eating tums,no need to suffer. I wake up in the middle of the night for them, it helps instantly.
  • Yeah, thank God for Tums.  I also walk about 2 miles on the treadmill every night after dinner and it has been miraculous.  When I walk, no acid reflux.  If I skip a night, I often wake up gagging on stomach acid.
  • i never had bad heartburn but i just went to the ENT today for a chronic and persistent sore throat since february and it turns out i have horrible reflux that has my throat very inflamed.  the ENT was afraid to prescribe anything so he gave me a list of helpful meds and wants my ob to determine what i can take.

    p.s. you know what foods aggravate reflux?  the best foods!  i am so bummed - no chocolate, tomatoes, garlic, onion, carbonation, mint, spicy, coffee, etc.

  • Up to about a month ago, I was popping Tums like there was no tomorrow.  I, too, had never had heartburn prior to pregnancy, so didn't know what to do.  My doctor recommended taking Zantac twice a day, either two 75 mg or one 150 mg per dose.  Since I've been doing that, it's been a lot more bearable.  She said to take Tums after taking Zantac if I have any breakthrough heartburn.

    Zantac=awesome!

  • I've been getting a LOT of HB - I wake up gagging too from the acid.  I've never taken Tums, so I'm trying to avoid eating anything within 2 hours of going to bed.  That, eating smaller dinners and propping up on more pillows.  It helped last night.
  • I have had major heartburn since the day I got my BFP and it's only getting worse.  I was eating tums like candy and I think my body finally got immuned to them.  So I called the drs. office and they told me to take Prilosec. So far it has been working.  My mom keeps telling me the old wives tale about heartburn=hair on baby, I tell you what if that is true I better make her 1st hair cut appt before she gets her hospital pictures taken because she is gonna need it!!

  • Thanks ladies these are all really good suggestions. I'm going to go with the zantac and tums and hope that helps. I'm thinking being on modified bedrest isn't helping the situation, but I am allowed a 20-30min walk each night so I'll be taking advantage of that in hopes that it helps a little too!

  • I get heartburn really bad and I use Tums and Zantac. Be careful with how many Tums you take, my doctor told me they can cause kidney stones....something to do with the calcium I think.

  • I have had a problem with Heartburn as well!  I have never had a problem with it before, but it is the worst!  It wakes me up all the time!  Here lately it has let up a little, but I pay close attention to what I eat during the day that may bring it up at night!  So no tomato sauces or anything that has acid in it!  I have Tums right next to the bed.  I take them and go right back to sleep!  But I hate it!
