3rd Trimester

So, my Doctor...

doesn't let you go past 39 weeks.  I haven't ever heard of this and I just found out today at my appt.  I asked her how far past 40 weeks she will let a patient go and she said she won't  She doesn't like ppl to go past 39weeks.  She basically said what's the point in it.  Does your Dr do this also and I am like the last one to know about it or does it seem kinda not right to anyone else?

Re: So, my Doctor...

  • *curls lip*  I don't like the sounds of this at all!  What's the point in it? Really?

  • kinda a wierd thing to say, the point would be that 40 weeks is full term! Strange that an OB would say that, babies tend to come when they are ready!
  • Uh... "the point" would be to let the baby develop to full term... That response wouldn't make me happy at all. There is some evidence that 40 weeks is actually an underestimate of gestation length in white women (I can pass the article to you if you want).

  • I would be pretty upset.  That doesn't sound right at all.
  • My doctor is kind of similar in that she doesn't like patients to go full term if this is their first birth and if they seem to be having a large baby. She just said it makes it harder to have a vaginal delivery your first time the bigger the baby is.?

She will let you go a week over your due date before inducing if you want to though. She does leave you a choice.?

  • Did you ask yoru doc how many of her inductions end up in c-sections?  I would be questioning being induced at 39 weeks if there wasn't a medical reason.
  • Kinda sounds like your doctor doesn't like to be inconveniance with people going into labor on their own. If he/she induces them, she/he can plan it around his/her schedule....IMO

  • Well she said that since she knows how far along I am and how old the baby is then what's the point.  And she also said something about having big babies cause the farther ya go the bigger the baby and what are you trying to prove and then told me a story about a baby she just delivered that was some lady who wasn't anybodys patient there and she had to take her and the baby was huge and got stuck and she broke her finger trying to move his sholder and rotate him cause he was big and there was no room and blah, blah, blah.  I don't know.. it's just what she said but my view of it is I would like to go into labor on my own when God decides for me to go into labor and for Tanner to be born.

Yes, I did.  And her answer was if you end up having a c-section then you probably would of needed one regardless and that she prepares you well for induction by stretching your cervix and stripping your membranes.

  • My doctor doesn't like to let people go past their due dates, but she would never induce before 40 weeks if there wasn't a reason for it.

  • Mine will let me go 7-10 days after EDD....Before they induce. Fine with me...even though I am miserable- I'd wrether her stay put. The longer she stays in- the better off she will be! Wink
  • Sounds kind of wacky to me
  • My doc doesn't like to let people go past 41 weeks, but I've never heard of a doc not going past 39 weeks. I don't think I'd be happy with that.
  • I would definitely throw a fit to not be induced if you don't want to.  I'm actually being induced at 39 weeks myself . . . but my baby's big enough that they are worried about trauma.  (DD broke her collar bone during delivery because she was so big.)

ANyway, it's still my choice and he'd never insist that I be induced.  Besides that, I'm already dialating nicely and probably won't make it that far anyway.  So, setting an induction wan't a big ussue for me.  But if her reason is that she just doesn't like to . . . .or she'd better be ready when I come ungluded!!!

Sorry, feeling "strongly" about things today.  :)  Best of luck - and I'm sure you'll be fine whatever your choice.

  • Oh no way, i wouldn't let my doctor tell me they don't go past 39 weeks.  I have a ten day overdue window.  Only then will they think of inducing me.  That is a little crazy to want to induce at 39 just because.
