i'm sorry, but I hate them all! On the plus side, none of them sound trashy, they are all just very out there. I think some of those names could definitely grow on me after a while though.
Also, how did you come up with some of those names (like bay??!)? Just wondering because I am still looking for a good, interesting boy mn and can't think of anything good.

bay is actually one i came up with several years ago. i just saw the word and thought it would be really great as a name. i'm worried because i've recently seen it on some name lists and in baby name books. i think the good thing to do is not look exclusively in name books and pay attention to words, surnames, and places as well.

sorry this is my third reply, it's just that it is very refreshing to see some names other than the typical olivia, abigail, lily, jacob, jackson, etc! I honestly really like Bay and Hill a lot! Kind of classy!
Honestly, unless your son is anything but an (pardon the pun) alpha male, Wolf will get his ass kicked every day. What if he likes fantasy literature (ie, the kind of person who might wear a, uh, wolf shirt)?
Bay isn't good, but Marguerite is tolerable. I think you should go with David instead of Davis. That whole name sounded like a law firm.

thank you! i was actually worried that everyone would hate all of them. it's good for at least one person to like some of them! i know most of the posters on here prefer really traditional names or super trendy ones, but i rarely see anyone with names i like. i do understand they're not most people's style, though.

carolina is the traditional european pronunciation, care-oh-leen-uh.
That's how mine name is pronounced.
Thank Goodness you're going the same route!! I hate, hate when it's pronounced with a long "i"!
So, obviously, that's my vote.
thanks! i have only seen it on here that people pronounce it like the state, but i have met or heard of tons of caro-leena's. definitely the traditional way for me.

good point, but no because i have observed that what most people on this board like is completely different from what i grew up with/ experience in my community now. even with most of our friends who live all across the country, i realize their names might be "unusual" on this board, but they're all really old traditional family names. luckily, my children will attend small, private schools as dh and i did and the batch of names there seems to differ tremendously from the mckinzies and jaxsons on this board. it's just a matter of knowing how it fits with the group in which they will grow up.

The boys names are especially bad. I am all for using names that pay tribute to your heritage, and I really like some Germanic names but these are just...wow.?

Exactly. I'm German, and I like a lot of German/European names. But some just don't work well unless you are in Germany (or another Central-Eastern European country...)!

No way. There are just less people who have the cajones to not just think past the Top 100 (or even 1000), but to go with something they really love, rather than be concerned with what others think. (Although it is kinda fun to post names and sit back...) Once that baby is here and named, everything falls into place, whether she's Katie or Bay.
And who wants their kid to share his name with four others in his class? tct, I feel ya, sister!

thanks! it's good to know there are like-minded people on this board.

I think that people should really read the end of Freakonomics when it talks about the education level of the mother and the names that their children have. As my name is Tiffany (approx 9th grade education level for the mother), I am really leery of popular names. Unusual names like Bay and Wolf may actually signify higher education for the mother and thus put the child in a better position. It's hard to run that line, though, as some unusual names could easily go the other way!
Don't worry, though. Once I post my list, I'm sure that I'll get tons of bashing!

that's kind of what i was saying about people i know/ went to school with. most of them who have "unusual" names are very well educated and many are from very old/ powerful families. i don't really care about making my child's name sound 'fancy' or anything, but in my community, most influential people have names that probably wouldn't fare too well on this board. i do know what you mean, though, about going the other way. i've heard way too many weird names from less educated families.

I love Carolina. It is on our list as well but spelled w/ a K. It still boggles my mind that so many ppl on here are so confused by this name. lol
I also like Bay -very pretty-but I could never use it mainly b/c I cannot stand Bay Buchanan and she is all I associate it with. I really don't mind any of the girl names. I kind of like Davis which surprises me b/c I hate David. The others are nms but I have def. seen worse!

that's funny, i didn't think anyone else here knew who bay buchanan is! but i did like the name before i heard of her. i hate david, too (my brothers are john and david, sister is mary clare) but for some reason i feel like davis is an old-sounding, strong name for a boy. i guess i feel like if you're going to go with an "unusual" name, make sure it's at least a recognizable word so it won't seem as weird and will be easily pronounced.

tct1219 - I think that we're on the same page. I liked pretty much all of your names, so there ya go! I would love to have a boy named Wolf!
As my husband is from Poland, we'll probably do some of those pretty mean sounding Slavonic names - (e.g. Konrad, Raclav). We also love Faulkner. I'm sure that they will not be the favs of a lot of people, but oh, well! I think that we can get away with it because DH's last name is so crazy that it would almost be strange to attach a "Logan" to it.

My sister-in-law is Bailey - we call her Bay quite a lot, I think that's a pretty common nn for Bailey. I didn't like it at first but considering the nn connection, I don't think it's bad.
I love your names. Particularly love Carolina (my great-grandmother's name) and Francesca (my grandmother's). My family tree is Austrian on my mom's side and Prussian/Swiss on my dad's, so I definitely see where your names are coming from. My list includes Agata, Margaretta, Loiza, and Sonnenschein, all family names.

thank you! we like very similar names. i'm actually surprised nobody thought francesca saunders sounded weird, i had a post about it the other day because to me it sounds extremely italian so i wasn't sure about how it would sound with our last name.

I also wish people would stop treating Freakonomics like it was knowledge revealed from a burning bush. If you name your son KitchenAid Mixer, yes, he's going to have one hard life. But Wolf isn't really in the same category. I know two Wolfs. (Hmmm...Wolves?) One is a school board member. The other is in the state legislature. Oh, and then there's that Blitzer guy on CNN. His name doesn't seem to be holding him back.
And seriously, people, did you read the rest of the book? Steven Levitt admits that some sections really have no basis in the economics he's supposed to be utilizing, and they are BLATANTLY racist.

Just remember that someone has to live with this name. My bff is named Dale and she hates it. Her mom thought it was "different". Hill reminds of that. Hill is just not a name. Neither is Bay in my opinion. Bay is something you do at the moon. You could name her Hilary and call her Hill for short, that would be super cute. Bay, could be short for something maybe I can't think of what.
Wolf I have heard of, don't particularly like and Fox I have never heard and don't like. Carolina, Marguerite, and Davis I do like a lot. Francesca is okay, especially if you two are European.
I especially worry about boys with odd names, girls it's a little less difficult.

i actually have hill on the list for a boy. i'm still out on that name, but i do like it and have known a couple of them who seem to like their names just fine. as for bay, i realize it's a word, but it is also a name, even though it's not very common. that's part of the reason i like it. it's at least recognizable and easy to spell and pronounce, unlike some of the "actual names" people come up with.

most of them are eastern european/ german names, like wolf. i am german and dh's family is austrian. i have actually known a couple of men named fox.

Ok, I change my mind. I don't like Carolina then. I think it will be mispronounced all.the.time.
