Anyone have Mirena or Paragard?

Considering getting an IUD and my OB gave me info on both of these. What is your experience with them? Did it hurt being placed? What do you like/dislike about it?I have PCOS and I didn't really want to get back on any method of BC. I also BF if that matters.

Thanks

Re: Anyone have Mirena or Paragard?

  • I have the Mirena.  Minimal hormones.  I had it placed at my 6 week PP appt and my cervix was still slightly open.  Didn't hurt at all to be placed.  Mild cramping that day and spotted about a week.  Nothing since.  I also BF.  I love that I don't have to remember to take a pill everyday or anything like that.  I don't have to think about it at all.

The only bad thing.  I had a first degree tear and she cut my strings too long.  The end of the string rested right were the tear was.  It hurt so bad when it would rub against it.  I went back in a month for a placement check and she cut the strings shorter and nothing since.

    It's been wonderful.

  • ParaGard for about 2m now.

LOVE it. The worst part was the speculum (sp?). I spotted for a few days, no cramping.

It is SOOOOOO freeing, no worries!

I too BF, no problems. Normals periods.

  • I got the Mirena IUD almost a year ago and love it!  It was a bit uncomfortable going in, but not much worse than a pap (just pop a couple ibuprofen an hour before appointment).  I did spot for 6 weeks post insertion (which is normal) and have had very light periods since.  I am very happy with my choice and encourage friends to ask their doctors about it after they have kids!

  • I have paragard and I love it. I never have to think about BC, no hormones, lasts for 10 years (or less), did not hurt at all.  The only bad thing was a little spotting after.

  • Got the mirena about a week ago. ?It did hurt going in but I had a c-section not a vaginal birth. ?Once the speculum was taken out I had mild cramps that day. ?Woke up the next day and felt normal. ?No real spotting or pain since. ?
  • I had Mirena inserted this past December. So far, so good.

It did not hurt being placed, and I only had mild menstrual-type cramps afterwards. The most uncomfortable part for me was how itchy the strings were before they curled up around the cervix (about 2 weeks).

So far my only "con" is that I bled for pretty much 3 months straight. Ugh. But it finally stopped, and I just had my first real period on Mirena. It was much shorter and lighter than before.

It's nice to not have to think about BC at all. It also ended up being cheaper for us. Our insurance covered it 100%, and since I had already met my deductible, we didn't owe a cent. With my old BC, we were paying a $50 copay every month.
