How do you clean baby's ears?

DS itches his ears like crazy when he's tired, so I'm afraid of putting any soap and water near them because I don't want to make the itching worse.  But now I feel like he has wax buildup and his ears even smell a little funny up close.  What do you do to keep your baby's ears clean?

p.s. we had the itching checked out and ears are healthy, it's just a bad habit he has.

We just use baby Q-tips on the outside of DD's ear. I know what you mean about the smell. There were little crevices that we kept missing. It took us a while to get her all cleaned up.

I put the washcloth over my finger when were in the bath and clean behind and in her ear.  I wash her face and ears with just water then add the soap to the washcloth.

this.  I also use a qtip to clean the outside of her ears.
