Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Can I sneak in to ask a question?

I have a lot of family members who want to buy us diapers, and they keep asking what size I need. How many bags of new born diapers did you need? Or, should I just ask for size 1? (I know all babies are different, but I was just looking for a general idea.)

Thanks!

Re: Can I sneak in to ask a question?

  • My DD was 6 lbs 14 oz at birth and 6lbs 6 oz when we left the hospital.  She was in NB for about a month and is now still in 1s.  I would ask for 1s or 1/2s.

  • I used about 3 boxes of NB and then we moved her up to 1's. DD was 8lbs 7ozs at birth. You are right, it all depends on the size of your LO and there in no way to know that. I was told DD would be under 8lbs.

  • Tell them to get you Target or Walmart GCs because you do not know what brand will work nor which size you will be in for how long...it is SOOOO different for every baby. If they do buy them get them someplace you can exxchange.
  • My DS was 7 pounds at birth and 6 lbs 13 oz when we left.  I didn't think I would have such a skinny baby and had to go out and buy newborn diapers.  He was in them for about a month.  But if you are having people buy them for you, like pp, I would ask for size 1s.  GL!

  • You can ask for a couple bags of newborn (Maybe 3-4).
  • DS was in NB for almost 6 weeks...but he was 6lbs 4oz and is still only in the 20% for weight.

If you feel comfortable ask for a gift card instead. Even if you knew what sizes you would need, you don't know what brand will work for your LO. Or be sure to keep the receipts if they give them.

  • DS was 7lb14oz at birth and we still used 2 large boxes of NB, then 2 boxes of 1's and I think 2 boxes of 2's.  Right now he's in size 3.  I think 1 large box of a few sizes would be a great start and then if you end up needing more on one size you can run out and get it.

  • I told them to get diapers I can exchange at walmart so I can get the sizes I need after DD was born.  Most of them took that well and thought it was a good idea...
  • Kelsey was 7 lbs 2 oz when born.  She was in preemies for about a week.  We had her in newborn size for probably about 2 weeks, then 1's til about 2 months, and now in size 1-2 (swaddlers).  I think we will probably be in those for another month before going up to 2's or 2-3's.

If I were you I would ask for 1's and 1-2's and if you need smaller sized diapers later on, you can get some as needed.

    That's a good idea!

    This exactly.

3/22/09 - Lily Grace, born at 33 weeks, 2 days
    9/12/14 - M/C @ 7 weeks, 1 day (ectopic)

  • Ds was 7lbs2oz and wore NB diapers for 5 weeks which was until he was about 10lbs
  • Size 1's can fit a baby starting at 8 lbs, so depending on how big your baby is, you may not need NB at all. I use CDs with this LO, but with my son, he only went through one package of NB before I moved him up to size 1. Also, JARbaby has great advice. Gift cards might be best because you don't know which brand will work best for your baby. I've seen so many posts on here where they end up switching to a different brand but are stuck with packages and packages of the original brand without any receipts. I think a good diaper to start with is Pampers Swaddlers. Those seem to be a favorite.
  • I actually asked for sizes 1, 2, and 3.  It's been really nice as Abigail has moved up to not have to immediately run out and buy the next size, I always have at least one pack on hand!
