Babies: 9 - 12 Months

pincher grip? what age?

when does this happen? ?my DS is 9mo today and does not have this skill yet.

Re: pincher grip? what age?

  • my DD had it around 6 months- but that is early from what i read.

just keep letting him practice. put things on his tray when he is in the highchair and let him go at it. only way he will learn.

  • dd started this a few weeks ago. She started with grabbing the tags on her bibs & toys. ?

  • My Ethan is just starting to develop this...I noticed it today when I was feeding him.  I always give him some puffs or something small to play with and try to eat when I feed him his solids.  It rarely ends up in his mouth, but we keep trying.

  • oliver is just really starting to get a hang of this....it's about time....but he still shoves his whole hand of puffs in his mouth most of the time
  • Anderson started practicing it this past month and is getting pretty good. But I remember reading in a book that it should be developed by 12 months.

  • My DS just started using his pincher grip just a few weeks ago. After giving him Cheerios to "practice" he'd get more on the floor then in his mouth. But Pedi told me to do that so he would learn. Now he's starting to get more in his mouth and less on the floor :) YAHOOO!!!
  • I could have sworn dd had been doing this, but according to my pedi it's highly unlikely for a baby younger than 9ish months to be able to do this.  apparently it's not just that they hold the item with thumb and forefinger, but they must pick it up with just thumb and forefinger.

so i guess we'll be practicing with cheerios and puffs when we introduce those things.

  • it is possible at a younger age. she was eating puffs and cheerios by 6.5months old- picking them up one at a time with the right fingers. but like i said- she is more of the exception when it came to that.

  • DS is almost 11 months and feeds himself by shoving fistfuls of food into his mouth. I have never seen him to the pincer grip. I don't know if that's because he can't or because he just refuses to feed himself 1 piece at a time. Either way, I am not concerned yet.
  • DS has had this for awhile. Not sure what the norm is though.

  • My DS just got this over the past week. He's able to pick up his finger foods using the pincher grip and get most of it into his mouth. He is a little over 7 months. However, I am not sure of what the "average" age for this is.
  • DS has been doing this for the past 2 weeks(so about 7 mos) with his puffs. He does still shove fistfuls in too though. When he pinches a puff, he holds it up to examine it before putting it in his mouth, too cute!
  • this makes me so frustrated this time around LOL dd1 was eating all finger foods with a pincher grasp by 8 months. and most/all went to her mouth, but dd2 is so different - i just practice with her and hopefully she'll start doing it more
