2nd Trimester

Uggh No comfortable sleep position

It's insane. I sleep as I am told on my left side and my various extremities go numb. I thought sleeping on your back was the problem and numbness can happen - NOT when you are sleeping in the prescribed position. So I flipped to my right side. Then I flipped back. Woke up finally at 6:30am because nothing was comfy and my back literally ached.

This is going to be a very long last Tri if I can't sleep. Does the wedge really help??

Re: Uggh No comfortable sleep position

  • I haven't been able to get comfortable at all the last two nights. It has been horrible. I woke up at 6 this morning and am aching all over. I am hoping that this is temporary because of my horrible allergies right now.?

I have the Boppy pillow and love it. It has been wonderful. I also have a body pillow and it works well to- however FI steals it 90% of the time. ?

  • I haven't tried the wedge but I did try a body pillow and hated it! So, I've been using just one extra pillow to tuck under my belly (still not that comfy but works best) when I'm sleeping on my side. I get numbness too when I sleep on my left side so I usually end up on my right side or on my back. If it's more comfy for you, you should try to prop yourself up a little with pillows and try sleeping on your back.

  • I've tried all the body pillows they don't seem to help with the back pain. I wonder if the pain is worse because I walked a lot and my sciatica was outta control......?
  • I use the snoogle. I got mine burlington Baby depot. It's $10 cheaper there than at BRU. It took me about a day to find what worked for me, but now I love it.
  • I have this problem & i am only 20 weeks. Sometimes I can't wait for morning because I hurt so bad.

I'm sure thats probably alot of it.  I walk alot, and anytime I really feel the sciatic bothering me afterwards, those nights are HORRIBLE for trying to sleep and just wake up stiff and sore.  With my first i use to use a pillow under my tummy, a pillow between my legs and 1 pressed up under my back just a little.  It helped a bit but all preg. are different.  This one I don't care for a pillow behind me at all.  Hope things start getting little better for ya

Catherine is absolutely adorable!!! What a terrific smile she has!?

  • I was extremely restless last night, I think partially remnants of the full moon the day before. I can never sleep for the days around a full moon. My leg goes numb if I lay on my back, but I'm early enough along I guess that I just switch to my side and am ok. Lots of wiggling last night though!

  • I hate sleeping on my side too, it hurts and squishes my arm and shoulder. I got the Snoogle as well and I am LOVING it. It lets me sleep sort of on my back, but tilted to the side and with my legs elevated. It's hard to explain but it is amazing. I have had a lot of sciatic pain as well (had a back operation a few years ago for an injury) and it is so much better now.
  • I'm having the same problem, and found I'm most comfortable on my back. My sister gave me her Snoogle, but that thing is huge and takes up half the bed. I haven't figured out the best way to use it yet.

I go to a chiropractor regularly and that has really helped with the back pain and my sciatica.

  • I noticed my sciatica gets worse if I walk as part of exercise, so instead of walking, I use the elliptical..keep the feet pedals as low as possible, almost like you are gliding. It really helped my sciatica, plus do some stretching afterwards.  Definitely see a physical therapist for exercises that will help with strengthening the muscles in your buttocks and hips.

As for sleeping positions, invest in a snoogle. You can create many different positions with it...you can tuck it under your hip when you sleep on your side...you can use it to support one side of your torso when laying on your stomach, I found this position helpful in relieving the numbness in the hips/ buttock regions.

  • No advice, just sympathy. I have an insane amount of pillows on my side of the bed (5 or 6... at least), and I spend all night long trying to pound them in the right position. Then about the time I get comfortable, I have to pee. I woke up FOUR times last night to pee. I don't think I'm going to sleep all night long for a year at least.
