Anyone have an elective cerclage?

At my MFM appointment on Monday my cervix measured 3.2 cm which they said was fine. However I've done some reading and it seems to be on the low side of "fine". At my next appointment on Thursday I was thinking of asking about having an elective cerclage to prevent shortening. Did anyone have this done? Do you think I need to consider it at this point?

Re: Anyone have an elective cerclage?

  • my MFM had told me that in certain cases it can actually cause uterine irritability and either cause contractions or PTL. ?your body sometimes wants to "reject" the foreign object. but you never know........

  • I think the jury is out on preventive cerclage (try googling prophylactic cerclage), not sure that any of the research shows that it really helps. I'd def talk to your dr about pros & cons.

here's an abstract that might interest you.

  • Just want to add that my cervix shortened suddenly to 1 cm at 23w. ?I did not have a cerclage & made it to 35w6d w/bedrest & mild meds. ?My cervix continually gradually disappeared...I was completely effaced & 4 cm dilated by around 34w. ?I probably would have delivered even later, but I had to be induced due to elevated bp! ?I think that the key is to keeping your uterus calm & contraction-free, so take it really, really easy & rest horizontally as much as possible.
