So my second appt was today. All was well. Blood pressure was good, lost 2 lbs. Over all feeling pretty good. The doc comes in and asks if my pap was reviewed with me yet. I am like no, I called for all my test results and was told everything was normal. Well he then launches into the fact that my pap was abnormal. He talks about the grades of abnormal results and that I am in the middle. Honestly, as soon as he started talking all I could hear was "whhaaa, whaaa, whaa"... My mind started going 3000 miles an hour. Thankfully my husband had come back with me today since we thought we would hear the heartbeat. I sat there and just looked at him. Hubby finally said to doc... what exactly does this mean. He said there is a chance of cancer cells. I needed to have an exam of my cervix under a microscope. The pap showed minor abnormal cells, so they dont think it is bad but they want to review the cervix. If all is well now, we will address again after the baby is born.
Then just so casual the doc says -- lets try to hear the heartbeat. Which thankfully they could find! That was awesome!
Then on to the microscope exam... not very pleasant! But he said the cervix did not look "too bad". Well, good I guess. At this point my head is swimming. And could not even come up with a question to ask!
So... HPV. Part of me is afraid to google it. Knowledge is power, but the doctor told me I was good for now. I will just freak and stress out.
Anyone else diagnosed with HPV?
Re: 2nd doctor appt today (HPV) - sort of long
i had an abnormal pap and had to have a colposcopy during my 2nd exam too.
HPV is really, really common and a lot of the time it will clear itself up on its own. it's especially common for it to flare up during pregnancy because your immune system isn't as strong. plus, only a tiiiiny percentage of HPV turns into cancer, and as long as you get regular paps, you should be fine. plus, it could totally clear up after you give birth! don't panic!
I've also heard of pregnancy induced HPV.
BFP#1 on 02/14/09 BIRTH to Mason 6lb9oz on 10/12/09
BFP#2 on 5/28/11 EDD 2/1/12 Natural M/C on 6/13/11
BFP#3 on 1/20/12 EDD 9/30/12 Natural m/c on 1/27/12
BFP#4 on 4/23/12 BIRTH to Isabella 7lb1oz on 12/19/12
I was diagnosed with HPV and then cervical cancer last year, I had the highest grade of abnormal cells and had a colposcopy and 3 procedures last summer... I've done a TON of research on the topic and would be more than happy to chat with you. The colposcopy isn't bad at all, and the results usually come in pretty quickly... your MD will probably just want to monitor you more closely during your pregnancy. Most times there isn't anything done (if you even need some kind of treatment) until after the baby is born - HPV won't harm your baby. This website https://www.nccc-online.org/ was really helpful to me to understand HPV, colposcopy and everything else.
Hopefully this has been helpful, let me know if I can answer any questions or anything. GL!
Hi, go ahead and research it, knowledge does help! ?I was diagnosed with HPV - and cervical displasia (pre-cancerous cells) 7 years ago. ?I had the colposcopy and biopsy, very unpleasent is an understatement! ?I had to have a LEEP procedure to remove the bad cells. ?Since then I have had normal pap results!
Here are some basic facts: ?HPV is a very common viral infection, up to 80% of women have some form...I wondered why I never heard of it until I had it.?
It is a sexually transmitted disease, and in some forms can be passed on to the baby during the birth process...talk to your Dr. about this.
I was told that since I had the LEEP procedure there could be some future issue with my cervix, they may have to sew it closed if it tries to open early during my pregnancy...ouch!
The good news is that HPV often goes away on its own! ?With treatment sometimes you will never have another outbreak, if you do not need treatment yet your Dr. will follow your cell progress and it may disapear on its own.
Good luck, and happy pregnancy!?
I have HPV as well. I had a cone biopsy when they found abnormal cells. I am actually high risk for cancer. Now that I am pregnant is has been 2 years since the biopsy and everything is normal. I wouldn?t worry too much it is very common! Good Luck.
I also have HPV and I agree it can be very scary! But just as PPs have said, it is very common and you are almost 100% guaranteed to be ok if you consistently see your Gyno (don't ever skip visits). Cervical cancer can be prevented or caught very early and can be cured in almost every case.
I had abnormal cells and had to have a LEEP procedure about 2 years ago and no issues since then! Good luck to you and try not to stress too much over this.
thank you ladies.
I am feeling better! I did a little reading and feel better since.
It is amazing how common it is!
HPV is very common, in fact over 80-90% or so will get it at some point, and the majority of those will then get rid of the virus. There's many different strains, but the most common are 6, 11, 16, and 18, which cause almost all (75% and 90% although I can't remember which statistic for each type) cases of cervical cancer and genital warts. These are the exact four that are targeted in the Gardicil vaccine targets.
Just because you had an abnormal Pap smear doesn't mean that you will automatically develop cancer in the future, but obviously it's best to take care of the problem as early as possible. Jane Goody just passed away from cervical cancer, but that is mostly because Great Britain does not practice the same aggressive stance as the U.S. in getting pap smears and the like. My med school professor told us a few weeks ago that if she was living in the U.S. the likihood of her dying from it would have been a lot less because we would have caught it a lot earlier.
Bottom line, it sucks to know you have HPV, but you are in great company. This is the reason why we should vaccinate our girls before they become sexually active, but this is a big debate right now. I would follow what the doctor recommends, as he is more than likely very knowledgeable in this subject.
Good luck

About 80% of women who have cervical dysplasia before/during pregnancy no longer have it after pregnancy. During vaginal delivery your cervix sheds cells when it opens/thins out. So pregnancy may be the only "treatment' you need. Good news!
But you must must must get a pap smear yearly for at least three years to make sure it clears.

I have HPV as well. As someone mentioned earlier, I couldn't believe I had never heard of it before I found out I had it! Anyway, I had a colposcopy and LEEP procedure done five years ago. Since then, I have not had any other abnormal paps.
When I was pregnant with my son 3 years ago, my dr. wasn't concerned about risks to the baby. The only special thing she did was an additional ultrasound at 28 weeks to make sure my cervix was still holding strong. It was..so the ultrasound was just an extra bonus! If my cervix would have been opening, she would have done a cerclage.
Good Luck! I'm sure you and baby will be just fine.
