pumping dilemna

My LO is a bit over 2 weeks now and nursing well.  I have a hospital grade pump and wanted to start pumping in order to let DH give her a bottle once in a while and to also "free myself up" to spend more time with my 2 other kiddos.  Problem is..   I have tried pumping and am getting nothing!  What could be the issue?

Re: pumping dilemna

  • It could just be that your body is taking a while to "warm up" to the pump.  Pump first thing in the morning when you are most likely to get a lot of milk.  Don't expect to get a lot in the beginning.

Otherwise - call the manufacturer of your pump (Medela has a GREAT support line if that's what you have) and they will be able to help diagnose the problem with your pump if there is one.

  • Absolutely nothing or just a tiny bit?  Could be that you aren't making very much milk since your LO is still so small and isn't eating a lot when she nurses.  Have you pumped one side while she nurses on the other?  That may help.  Otherwise, I'd call the pump people and see if there's an issue with it.
