The twins have been sick with a cold and getting progressively worse for the last seven days. I took them to the doc on Monday and she said it was just a cold. I felt like an overprotective mama. Things kept getting worse and they have this awful, hacking cough that is preventing them from nursing. I've been having to EP and bottle feed to observe how much they are eating. I finally had enough (despite my MIL stating that she thinks they are just fine and it's a cold) and took them again to a different doc in the practice. She was definitely concerned and tested them for RSV and pertussis (whooping cough)--RSV came back neg but won't find out until Monday about pertussis. She prescribed an antibiotic for pertussis because that's what she thinks it is. She cautioned me that if it gets worse over the weekend or if they are not eating at all, take them to the emergency room immediately.
I'm so glad I followed my instinct...but now I'm scared for my babies. Please keep them in your prayers.
Re: My babies might have whooping cough...
My pedi is pretty cool - there are some things that she says are "viruses" and have to run their course. However I strongly urge mothers out there to questions doctors, as they aren't always right.
My son had flu like symptoms (with low grade fever) for about 5 days before I took him to her. She found he had ear infections in both ears, and an infected throat. I got him Amoxicillan, along with Ibuprofen and Tylenol if the fever persisted., and was told to give the antibiotic for him for 10 days (2x aday).
However on the 4th day his fever was super high (104.1) ALL DAY and even with the Ibuprofen and Tylenol it didn't go down. That very night I had to take him to ER - the did an Xray and he had Pre- Pneumonia. They had to prescribe a stronger antibiotic. The pediatric doc on duty told me if I had waited he might have seized.
Trust your instincts and get a second opinion.
