Sudden need to co-sleep?

DS has never slept in our bed (although the crib is in our room since we have a small apartment). Usually when he wakes up at night I can rock him back to sleep. For the past week he wakes up around 4am and after I rock him (and he seems fully asleep) every time his butt touches the mattress he wakes up and cries. After an hour of this up-down I resort to taking him into bed where he snuggles against me and sleeps. What gives? Any chance he'll break this habit on his own?
