Babies: 9 - 12 Months

NIP after 12mo?

ok, I've been very cool with the whole nursing in public thing, but now that he is getting older I am way more timid (which is not like me)

We were at a play place last evening and he wanted to nurse. I actually got up and decided to leave and nurse him in the car. Normally I would just whip it out.

I think I am worried about what people will think now that he is older. That and he is harder to hold on to!

others feeling this way and get over it? or did you just stop NIP?

Re: NIP after 12mo?

  • I don't NIP as much as I used to.  DS gets way too distracted and will not eat in public.  However, it isn't because of what others will think, it just doesn't work for us.  If he gets better I will continue to NIP.

  • While I was unable to nurse, but wanted to, I would never judge someone for nursing their young toddler in public. Do what you have to do! If people don't like it, whatever! It is not like he is 11.
  • Yeah, now that DS is getting a little older, it's hard enough to get him to sit still and nurse at HOME, much less while we are out and about!  So it seems less practical to me.

It's sad, but I'm sure people will judge you.  BUT, a lot of people were judging at 4 months too, and I wasn't going to stop then.  Do whatever makes you and your DS most comfortable!

  • I would have no problem nursing DD in public at that age.  However, there's no way we can do it- DD is way too distracted in public.  I tried a few weeks ago at a museum- we were in a very quiet section with no one else around, and she was still trying to climb all over me and look around at everything.

I think other moms wouldn't judge you- the only people that might are people who know nothing about breastfeeding, and they would likely have a problem with NIP in general, never mind the age of the baby.  I say do what you need to do, and screw the judgy people.

  • Typically, it's DS who doesn't want to NIP, he is usually way to too distracted. But, if he wanted to, I would no problem feeding him. Personally, I couldn't give two craps what anyone else thinks.?
