So irritated with my OB/GYN office! Long vent

Sorry for the lurker intrusion here, it just feels good to vent.

I am 39 weeks pregnant. I have an appointment at my doctor's office tomorrow to meet the last of the people that could be possibly delivering my baby. Call me crazy but I would at least like to know what the person looks like before they show up at the hospital to deliver my child.

So today I get an appointment reminder for my appointment and they let me know that it is with another person that I have already met. I call just to let them know that I need to meet with a specific person and inform me that she is "not on the schedule" for tomorrow. WTH? I made this appointment 2 weeks ago speficially to meet her. It would have been nice to know sooner so maybe I could have changed my appointment.

I know I am far more irritable right now than I would normally be but I am so sick of this office just treating me as if I am just buying shoes from them! Maybe this happens a lot with doctors' offices and I am just now noticing because I have to go every week.

Am I the only one who feels this way about their doctor's office?

  • I totally get how you feel. There were six docs at my practice and there was one I never met. I was totally nervous that I was gonna end up with that one doctor. Things worked out that I got my original OB that I saw when I started with the practice. But it's okay to be grumpy about it!!

But you're right - some of the larger practices can make you feel like a cow moving along the chute. After my birth experience at my particular practice, I left.

  • If you have had a healthy uncomplicated pregnancy then probably the OB/GYN office is just going to be more easy going about your experience.  I didn't WANT to see OBs bc I had planned on a midwife delivery.  Nope.  I ended up with a highly medicated C-section after 36 hrs total of labor.  I didn't meet all of the OBs and I only saw one I had never met when I was in the hospital with early contractions (she ended up delivering and we liked her) and one when I was already a week overdue.  So, fast forward to post-delivery morning.  This weird short dude with crazy hair comes in my mother and baby room and starts lifting up my gown, pressing on my stomach, and asking me if I am passing gas.  In my highly medicated state I am like, WTH?  So, I thought about it a second and said, you must be one of the other drs.  He was like, yes, I am Dr. So n So.  Nice to meet you.  Sometimes I think Atlanta is just a baby factory.  Not at all like the small town I grew up in, but at least I don't go to church with someone who has seen my vajayjay.
  • I know that you ladies are right - that I really have no control over who delivers my baby or how it all goes down. I'm sure at that point I won't give a rip. I am just irritated at this office for being so disorganized and I will say that it is much better that I found out before I actually showed up for the appointment and had to discuss this with them in person. Now at least I have time to rationlize and cool down.

  • I was pretty laid back about the whole-who delivers me thing. I chose my appointments based on what worked for my schedule. I ended up with the one doctor I had not met and had a fantastic experience-even though I was sick with a fever so it ended in a c-section.

I am a nurse, and honestly even though you have seen them before-they will most likely give you the same respect and care of a patient that they have known for years.  The key is choosing the right practice to begin with-make sure they respect the wishes of their patients. Just because you may remember meeting them does not mean they will remember meeting you-especially if it was just one time.

I would be mad about changing your schedule for this specific reason and the schedulers screwing up though!

  • I'm sorry this upset you, everything is irritable at 39 weeks :)

Honestly you won't care who is delivering you if you are anything like me. I had midwives and never saw the same one twice (not here in Atlanta) and the midwife who delivered DS was someone I had never seen before, and I loved him!

    Good luck!

  • I totally understand why you're upset and I would probably have the same reaction. Like ebear stated, I get the impression Atlanta is like a baby factory. My practice has 5 doctors and they're trying to ensure that I see all of them before delivering but have also said there is no guarantee that I'd see them all because of scheduling conflicts. Feel free to vent anytime. Baby will be here before you know it!!

  • Don't worry about it.  Think about it this way.  You'll spend far more time with the nurses, than the actual doctor.  And you won't know the nurses, right?  The doctor will literally check on you a few times, and be there to catch the baby as the head is crowning.....at least in my experience.  The nurses do the majority of the work.

And once baby is on the way.  You won't care!

  • That is actually a great point - I will mostly be with nurses that I have never met. Let me just say that my doctor's office is lucky I can vent here and get some good advice rather than "discussing" it with them in front of a crowded waiting room.
  • I don't have anything different to add, but just wanted to say Congrats, Welcome! ??

Good luck with your appt tomorrow! ? Maybe they will let you meet the doctor at your 40 week appointment. ??
