Has Leo been on thyroid meds since birth? Marina's PKU in the hospital came back funky and when they repeated it, they were still off. She is on 12 1/2 mcg's of synthroid daily and has been well controlled. Are they going to try to take Leo off sometime? Our endocrine doc said that they will try at age 3 and see what happens. They are pretty sure she will be able to come off of it. We'll see...
Re: ***Mrs.Destructo***
That's pretty much exactly Leo's story. His PKU thyroid test was wonky, and they repeated the thyroid test several times when he was in the NICU. He was discharged w/instructions to repeat the test one more time, and it came back with an elevated TSH but normal T4. So he started levothyroxine (25 mcg/day). He's been on the same dose since then, and he has blood draws every 3 months to make sure the dose is correct. Just last week his endocrinologist told me that he's pretty sure Leo doesn't need the med any more, but it's too risky to dc it until he's 3, because if he does need the med his brain development could be seriously harmed.
Is Marina's medicine in a pill? How do you give it to her? We mash Leo's pills with a spoon, mix with a bit of milk and squirt it into his mouth. It's kindof a pain in the butt, and every time I do it I spill 1/2 the pill powder in the process. In the grand scheme of things it isn't all that bad... except for the blood draws. Those seriously suck.
That is exactly what our endo said about Marina. We do have a pill that we crush with a pill crusher and then give it with applesauce. We put the applesauce on a spoon then put the powder on top and she takes it with out a problem. We used to mix it in one of the voulfeeders with some milk which our first endo said was fine, but our new one said that we shouldn't do it that way because it doesn't dissolve well and that we should give it to her crushed with food. I am hoping that she will be able to come off it, but if that is our biggest worry, I'll take it! I hate the blood draws as well, but I take her to CHOP(children's hospital of Philadelphia) and they are great with it. It is much easier than trying to get her contact in and out....if only we had someone that would do that for us....
