? about 1st u/s for those with twins

So....yesterday I had my first u/s for this pregnancy. It was inconclusive because it may be too early still, but one of the options the doc gave me was two sacs. There was a large-ish black sac on the u/s with a line through it, and she said the line could be a sac separation (they aren't sure if it's an empty sac, an umbillical cord, or two sacs).

So my question is this: what did your first u/s look like with twins? Was it two distinct sacs or were they close together/touching? How early was your u/s?

I know I sound really stupid and irrational, but I'm freaking out about the option of 3 under 2 and grasping at straws here. I don't find out anything from the doctor till either my hgc comes back suspicious or my next u/s which is next Thursday. Thanks for any input you have!

  • Your tickers shows you at 10 weeks.  Is that accurate?  I would have to assume it would be VERY clear at 10 weeks if you had one or two babies.  Was there one or more heartbeats?  Is your ticker off?

At 6w1d I was able to see seperate sacs and all babies had strong heartbeats.

  • at 8 weeks there were two distinct sacs and it was very obvious that there were two heart beats when I had my first u/s.

Good luck and best wishes to you!

  • Mine showed 2 very separate sacks at 7w3d.
  • at 10 weeks there should be no guessing - the babies are pretty well formed by then - look like gummie bears- not sacs... so i don't understand why any doctor would not be able to tell if it was twins- let alone that the baby was forming properly, etc.

are you sure you are 10w??

it was very clear at my 5w US that i was having twins.... by 10w they both looked like little gummie bears.

  • 7 weeks we saw one really big sac with two heartbeats in it.  One was behind the other so they had to really work the wand to see the 2nd heartbeat.  They are boy/girl so they happened to be close together and share what looked like one sac.

I would think at 10 weeks they could see heartbeats and give you a better idea of what's going on.

  • You're 10 wks pg?

I had my first u/s at 6 wks & 2 days, and there were  2 distinct heartbeats and there were 2 sacs that were butted up against each other, but there was a white line through it.  The way the sac(s) are really depends on the type of twins.  Identicals are more likely, but don't always share a sac, where fraternal twins always have seperate sacs & placentas.

The line through it could be  the division of the sacs.  Could they see anything in either sac?

  • Oh sorry I should just get rid of that stupid ticker. That's just from LMP, but due to an erratic cycle I have no idea how far along I am. I had an HCG at what I thought was 6 days late and it was 1. Then I took a pregnancy test at about 25 days "late" and it was the darkest, fastest positive I've ever gotten. That's why we had the u/s, to date the pregnancy.

The doc was so vague yesterday that I'm not sure exactly what to think. She said it could be none, one, or two....but wouldn't commit. So, I hit the bump! :o) Thanks ladies.

  • at 6 weeks 2 days https://kidforkid.blogspot.com/2008/06/there-is-baby.html this is what we saw.  We didnt get to go back til 11 weeks and that is when we CLEARLY saw 2 little gummy bears.  I agree with the others if you really are 10 weeks i should have been very clear.

  • just wanted to say good luck! my first u/s was at 7w3d and we only had one sac with the three babies in it. you couldn't see the dividing lines between the babies at that point (actually, you never really could) so i'd guess it's two sacs really close together.

i hope you get good news at your next u/s!

This is exactly what the u/s looked like yesterday. Most likely, I ovulated late which means I'm not 10w yet--probably closer to 5 or 6. The doc said it might just be too early at this point to see a baby/babies or hb/hb's. She saw a totally straight line right thru the middle of the sac which is why they said it could be 2. Hopefully by next week we'll be able to see hb or hb's.

  • Did your dr. schedule you for a follow up u/s in a few weeks to check for a heartbeat?  There are lots of women that have an u/s very early on and either see an empty sac that never turns into anything or there are cases of disappearing twins.  Usually dr's like to see the 2 heartbeats before they say it's twins.
  • At 7w1d I had an ultrasound that showed two babies.  We didn't see the membrane until around 12ish weeks (mine are identical).  I hope everything works out for you (oh, and fwiw there's a bunch of us on here who are having three under two so come on back for advice if it is twins!).
  • I'm going back next Thursday for another u/s. She was noncommittal about what it might be, just said that they aren't sure if it's two sacs or one, or if there's anything in them/it. They did an hgc/progesterone and are supposed to get back to me today. If the test comes back suspicious at all (really elevated, etc), they're getting me in sooner next week to recheck the u/s. I just hate not having any answers! Thanks so much for all the advice/help!

I would think by 10 weeks you would know for sure....there should be VERY obvious heartbeats and babies by then...HTH

  • We had 2 distinct sacs and heartbeats at 6-7 weeks.
