3rd Trimester

Induction question/vent

Ok, so my SIL is due 4/17. For the past 2 weeks she's only been dialated 1 cm and I'm not sure what percentage effacement. She had BH and sporadic contractions over the weekend and then when she went to her dr. appt on Monday, she told him about how she was so "unconfortable" (insert eye roll here) and he offered to induce her on Wednesday (today) b/c of her discomfort and b/c he thinks that she isn't going to dialate on her own anymore than she already has. Now we all know that women can go from 0 or 1 to 10 in a matter of hours, so why this doc thinks that she won't dialate any further, more than a week out from her due date is beyond me.

And give me a break. Who isn't uncomfortable towards the end of their pregnancy....

Does anyone else think that this is odd? I don't think my doc would induce me b/c I'm uncomfortable and he definitely wouldn't based on the fact that I was only 1 cm dialted at 38 weeks.

Re: Induction question/vent

  • im over 40 weeks and they are waiting until next week to even make a decision about it...i will be over 41 weeks at that point. Even when i say Im ready now he says lets try to wait and see. Which I completely agree with..im just really really really anxious!!

  • Oh I know my doctor wouldn't. She has already mentioned that the most they will allow me to go over is 2 weeks, which I of course don't intend to let happen. By day 8 or 9 over, we are going to be setting somethng up. I have noticed from some stories, some doctors will do whatever their patients ask. But inducing at 38 weeks does seem early, unless they thought the baby was getting too big or something like that.

  • That's what I thought at first too--that it had something to do with the baby or his health--but he's great and not too big or anything....that's why it made no sense to me.

  • perhaps that dr suggested the induction b/c they were concerned about other things.

her stress level may be causing the baby stress and her blood pressure my not have been great.

  • Odd and irresponsible IMO.  That doctor has no reason to think she won't dilate on her own.  I wish certain doctors had more faith in women's bodies and more understanding that not everyone's labor follows some textbook, but that it's still normal.

  • oh, and also, she's doing fine. Her BP is normal...she's just "uncomfortable" bla bla bla

  • My co-worker's dr said she wouldn't likely dilate enough to deliver vaginally because she was unable to with her first. They didn't induce her, but she had a scheduled c-section.

My dr won't induce, either. I think it's weird that he will, but then again, I think it's weird that they'd schedule a c-section if it wasn't medically necessary/

  • My induction with my daughter was pretty much elective because I wanted to be done.

Irresponsible and stupid? You betcha. More so on the doctor's part. One of the many, many reasons I left that practice before I got PG with this baby.

  • Maybe the OB is saying that to soothe her, but will "not be able to schedule her" until coincidentally close to/past her EDD? Hopefully, it is sort of a patient management technique. I know my DR wasn't concerned about me going into labor early and said she wouldn't stop it, but then when we thought it was starting last night - and even the L&D wouldn't let me go home, so it was pretty convincing - she changed her tune. I think she was just blase' (SP) about it because she didn't think it was an issue  I was "high, firm & tight) at the time and she didn't want to worry me.

I hope that is the case anyway - that the OB is just placating her. I was induced with my previous two, but not until I was 42 and 41+ weeks. My OB at the time only concented to the slightly earlier induction of my 2nd because the 1st was so big and he (correctly) thought #2 was huge. It sounds like they have new  drugs to ripen the cervix, but at the time, I was told it wouldnt work if the cervix wasn't ready and I would wind up with a C-section.

  • I'm 1cm dilated at 39.5 weeks, and my doctor isn't going to induce until 41.5 weeks. Why? Because inductions are more likely to end in c-sections. I'm not exactly comfortable, but I can wait, especially in light of that little tidbit of information!
  • Yea I don't get that at all!  I guess all docs are different?

A friend of mine at work was due on the same day as me (April 16th).  So she tells the doc she is uncomfortable and he's like ok, we'll induce you on the 4th.  So she has her baby (although she was very small).  But I think that was way early for her to be induced just because she was uncomfortable.

Meanwhile I am still going with the BHs and this shooting/burning pain in my rib that does not go away.  I'm literally almost crying to my doc and he's like whatever.

    I don't get it!!!
