Gel Acrylic nails??

I have been getting these since my wedding in July and i love them. Basically before them my nails would split (layer-wise) and just bend and tear it was terrible. I also would pick at the skin all around them (I was so grossed out by it but wouldn't even realize I was doing it) and with these they are too thick and rounded to do that so my hands look amazing. I kind of want to go back to natural bc I hear nails get stronger and grow faster when you're pregnant plus I know the fumes aren't the best. But I'm just real worried that I will fall back into my old habits again (and my hands are on display a lot for work).

Any other girls on the fence or are still getting nails done?

Re: Gel Acrylic nails??

  • I got rid of my fake nails right before my BFP.  I get manicures now and have them painted a color and this pretty much stops me from picking, I am a bad cuticle picker.  They are actually growing in very nice now!

  • i thought they were bad if you were pg cuz of the fumes?

anywho - i had the same issue with my nails, but took mine off about a year ago. The PNVs made such a different & my nails actually dont split or peel anymore & grow strong & long.

  • I still get mine done
  • I just got mine taken off 2 weeks ago...and i miss them soo much!! Ive had Acrylic nails for 15 months so my nails are now soft and a few are spliting and its a little painful, especially when you catch it on something and it splits even more!!

I still plan on getting manicures for a little while to keep them looking nice and I find when they look nice (even with out the acrylic) it stops you from picking or biting.

I will get the acrylics put back on eventually tho!

  • If you are getting 100% gel nails, they don't use the same chemicals that are in acrylics and are probably safer.  The problem is that a lot of places say they do "gel nails" but what they're really giving you is acrylics with a gel top coat and charging you more.  Ultimately, you'd probably be surrounded by women getting acrylics either way though so it's hard to avoid taking in those fumes.  I personally stopped getting my nails done when I started TTC.
  • I've been getting them for years.  My doctor with my first pregnancy said it wasn't a problem.  Honestly - I can't figure how having plastic on your nails could hurt your baby.  There are fumes...and dust - but you're minimally exposed.  My manicurist wore a mask when she was pregnant  - her sons are 20 and 12 and perfectly healthy.
