Baby Names

WDYT?

I have been thinking about naming my baby girl Maxine. Maybe with some cute spelling like Maxene. I thought this was too old fashioned at first but I have been getting a very positive response.

I was worried about someone mocking her as "Maxi pad" but I have heard that term is very old and no one even knows it anymore. Do you think this is a concern or not?

Re: WDYT?

  • I think the term Maxi pad is still alive and kicking...?

I like the name, but I too would worry and associate it w/ that.

  • Well I'm in my mid twenties and I know the phrase. I think most girls are familiar with it.
  • I wouldn't get too caught up in the Maxi pad reference. By the time most kids know what that is they will be past the name calling stage.
  • I can't see that term going away any time soon.  I'm not a big fan of the name but if you do use it I recommend spelling it the right way.  Maxene just looks weird to me.

  • Maxine is a good name - no need to screw with the spelling.  That will do nothing but force her to correct everyone she meets.  There are teasing things to go along with just about every name.  I'd rather you name her Maxine than something like Madysyn.
  • I'm young 20s, and I've never used the term maxi pad nor have my friends, at least to me. We just call them pads and we get what kind of pads we're talking about. I know what it is and I've heard my mom and grandmother say it, but I have never asked for a maxi pad, just a pad.

  • I don't like the name for just that reason, it reminds me of Maxi pad.

Maxine is a great name! In junior high there was a boy named Max and people called him Maxi pad. He was cute and popular so it was all in good humor. I think she might get called that as a joke, but not in a cruel way and I don't think it would stick. Great choice!
  • I'd be concerned with it. The name is NMS anyways.?

  • Ditto - dont' screw w/ the spelling.  There is nothing "cute" about it, for one, and you're only setting yoru child up w/ having to spell her name EVERY time she tells someone what it is.

  • I like the name Maxine (and have been thinking about it since your last post)! Even though I have used "maxi pad" and she might get teased, it wouldn't keep me from using this name. Maxine doesn't scream "make fun of me" like some names do.
  • I think it's a really pretty name (spelled Maxine, though... not the other way you have it). I would, however, be a little concerned about the maxi pad reference. Kids can be so mean. I also think of the old lady that is on those funny cards (Hallmark, I think?). If you love it, I honestly don't think I'd let the maxi pad thing ruin it. Kids will find something to tease in just about any name. If you love it, go for it!

  • I could get behind Maxine.  It's a bit unusual, but it has a certain old fashioned charm.

I do think she might get the maxi pad thing, but oh well.  Kids will tease her about something, and it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Please, please do not mess with the spelling though.  Maxine is a beautiful French name.  Maxene isn't cute at all, and it would just make the poor child look like her parents didn't know how to spell properly.

  • i think she'll probably get called max, not maxi pad, but please spell it the traditional way, not a "cute spelling" that is made up.

  • I love calling a girl Max -- so cute!!  No matter what her name is, kids will find their way to make fun of it.
  • LOL, Okay, okay, no Maxene. We will leave it alone. It was just an idea. DH probably wouldn't like it anyway. I could call her Xini for short too, (zini).
