Breastfeeding

pushing breast away and screaming??

My son is 7 mos old and has been EBF.  At daycare he gets bottles and I nurse him in the evenings, a few times a night and in the early a.m.  However, the past 3 days he pushes off the breast after a few minutes, screaming.  I thought maybe it was gas, but gas drops and doing bicycle legs doesn't seem to help if that's what it is.  I haven't eaten any new or different foods in the past few days.  Maybe he's teething?  Or just not feeling well?  Or wanting to self-wean?   I feel terrible that he is getting so  upset.  He is still eating his bottles w/o issue at daycare.  Any ideas??

Re: pushing breast away and screaming??

  • it sounds like he might be frustrated with the flow rate difference in your breast vs. the bottle

Maybe send slower flowing nipples to daycare

  • I'm having the same problem.  See my answer to the following post:

  • I agree that it's most likely a flow issue, but - have you tried switching sides when he does that? Sometimes when ds is fussing anf won't latch, I switch him to the other side and he takes it fine, then when he's done he'll switch back to the first side fine. No idea why.
  • He's been going to daycare for 3+ months now.  I never thought that he'd develop a preference for the bottle now.  I sent slower flow nipples today, so we'll see if that helps.

Yes, I switch sides when he fusses.  He'll seem ok on the opposite side, then push away and scream and I switch again.  Repeat, repeat, repeat.

  • I am the one that socalduo replied to in the previous post.  I bought the Breastflow bottles last night, and I was very impressed.  The bottles are really a lot like breastfeeding and it forced my DD to suck from the bottle the same way she does when nursing.  She had been pushing the breast away and screaming for the last few days, but after using this bottle only twice she took my breast with no problem at the next feeding.  It's still early and we'll see how she does tonight after using it at day care all day, but based on last night I'm hopeful that it solved the problem.  A BIG thanks to socalduo for the suggestion.
