I really have no idea!

..and I'm not able to log on to the bump often so forgive me if this is often discussed.?Went in for appt yesterday at 35 weeks 5 days and was told I am dilated 3 cm. The doctor didn't say anything about 'effacement' and I completely didn't ask for more details at the time since all I could think about was calling my husband to share the news!?However, the doctor didn't seem concerned at all and I was simply handed a paper with instructions (which included no marital relations; mind you this was a general slip not specific to my case).

So I guess my question is this....can you be dilated with no effacement? Or must effacement occur to bring on dilation? I have searched the net but have gotten mixed messages. Please share your knowledge with me oh wise nesties!! *wink* tia!?

My understanding is you can be one without the other.
