The day Adamswife said she kept her dog locked in the basement..

I thought I was going to fall out of my chair. I wasn't involved in that post, but, looking back I should've given my opinion.

I can't even remember why, I just remember him being banished to the basement.

Re: The day Adamswife said she kept her dog locked in the basement..

  • That literally makes me sick to my stomach
  • Loading the player...
  • HmmSad.  Why do people not get it that animals have feelings and needs and wants, etc.  Would you EVER banish your child to the basement???  No!  Hmm
  • That's terrible.
  • For how long?  Our cats get banished to the basement (which is finished and includes our office with a couch and our laundry room as well as their food, water and litter boxes) every now and then at night when they keep getting into things while we're sleeping.  We've tried just closing them out of the bedroom, but the one scratches on the door relentlessly until you let her back in.

ETA:  I missed the OP, but if it's like our situation, I don't see a problem.

  • ohhhh I missed that one....thank goodness.

What the heck is wrong with people!?!??

  • What is goin' on with all the animal posts?  Did I miss something good?
  • The sick thing is, these people are going to be parents.... how you treat your pets isn't a far cry from how you treat your children.... so when the kid acts up, will he or she be banished to the basement, left to cry in a crib, locked in a bedroom?
  • That really makes me mad.

    ?

My MIL kept our dog Bandit locked in a dark, unfinished basement. She let him out ONCE a day to pee/poop, never spoke to him or looked at him. After 5 years of being the family pet, he was banished because she "doesn't like hair".

    ?

That's why I stoke him from her. People who have the capacity to abuse or neglect any living creature that depends on you are psychotic.?

No, but I'm tempted to banish my husband to the basement on a regular basis. Stick out tongue

  • From what I recall:

He very blind and almost deaf, and couldn't get up by himself. They were debating putting him down (which they did i do believe) but in the meantime they were trying to keep him away from their older son b/c he would try to pet him and startle the dog and he would nip or bite. (dog thought the child was sneaking up on him) They moved him into the basement to keep the dog comfortable and undisturbed by the child.

I think it sounded mean but she was trying to come up w/ a good solution to a bad situation

  • I don't remember that. I must have missed that one
  • I never was cruel to my dog, but as a teenager, I definitely could've used some more maturity in my care for my dog.  When she got sick and I had to hold her as we put her to sleep before the pain of her spreading cancer got even worse, I just felt this immense burden at what a BETTER dog owner I could've been to her during her lifetime.  They have feelings and just want love like they give to us!  Someday whenever we get a house of our own and can have a dog, I can't wait to use my previous pain as reminder to be even better to my animals in the future!

I missed all that, I think it was during my early 2nd tri days and I remember a huge ruckus about it.

I hope her dog was freed from the basement and got better. Do you know?

I'm pretty sure they had to put him down b/c I remember her posting about being really upset about it. She is/was pretty level headed I think, so I think they way she posted it made it sound worse than she intended.

That makes my heart hurt, I hate it when furbabies are sick. I never had issues with her, I just remember that one post being a huge deal.

  • Well, you have to consider the source. She was a wee bit special.....

But I'm so glad that I missed that post, I think I would have ripped her a new one.

I hope this isn't in reference to a post I made a long time ago about my dog who got sick while she was in the bathroom during the day. I was far from mad...I felt sorry for her because she was so sick (but yes I was certainly exhausted and disgusted while cleaning up the mess later).

You obviously didn't read that post very carefully. She was supposed to be confined to strict crate rest for 4 weeks (per the vet) because she had a disc injury in her back. I couldn't bear to leave her confined to the crate for that long while I was at work so I gave her free run of the bathroom and closet (about 100 square feet), and then CARRIED her around with me at night so she wouldn't feel like she was in trouble if I kept her in the crate. The pain medication is what made her sick that day.

I have volunteered for years in animal rescue and seen the worst of the worst. My dogs are spoiled as if they were my children.

  • Tomcat- no, I wasnt responding to your post I was talking about the girl today on the 2nd tri who said the behavior modification crap didnt work and she kept him in the bathroom all day.  She was rediculous.  I can understand if he is sick and needs to be secured but to keep him there everyday all day and expect him not to go nuts is cruel.
