F/U about ear infections...

We had our appointment yesterday with the ENT and Emma should be getting tubes next week. They did a hearing test and she didn't do so well with low frequencies AND she still has fluid in her ears even after her pedi said last week she was fine.

So now my vent: After being diagnosed a couple of weeks ago with another ear infection she went in last week for her 18 month check up. She was still on antibiotics for the ear infection and her pedi said her ears were looking better. I said she was still really fussy and not sleeping at night. He told me she is not in pain since her ears look fine and that it was a behavioral issue. Basically, he said shut the door and let her cry. I told him I went ahead and made an appointment with the ENT and he said that was fine but being this time of year they will be reluctant to do tubes since we are getting out of cold season.

So here it is a week later and the ENT checks and she does indeed still have fluid in her ears which is causing her pain and not being able to sleep.

Sorry for the long post but I've been really frustrated about this. However, I am glad that she'll hopefully be getting some relief soon!

  • That stinks.  I hate when pediatricians do that kind of stuff.  Mine told me yesterday that kids under 1 don't have allergies.  So if they are 11 1/2 months, they can't have them but as soon as they hit 1 year, the magically get them?  Whatever!

  • I am glad she is going to get some relief. I would be pretty perturbed with the pedi to say the least.

Our pedi told us at 6 months that some drs will say babies can't have allergies before a year, but she's seen it, so they obviously can.?

  • Man I would be pissed at my pedi too! Poor thing!

  • Poor thing.

My pedi tends to stay away from 'behavioral' or 'parenting' stuff - unless I specifically ask ... which is great. I also think it's crap that 'babies don't have allergies' - DH and I both have them, and I know they both Jack sometimes. He's scratching his eyes and rubbing his nose and you're telling me they're not itching him??  Riiiight.

I hope she feels better. :(

  • Thanks everyone. She's scheduled for next Friday.

Yea, about the allergy thing, our pedi has said that it usually takes several seasons of exposure before a baby/child can develop allergies. So normally kids are 2 or 3 before allergies begin. However, Emma was told to take Zrytec the last time we went in for all this crud because it's probably allergy related. Go figure...

  • Hey - Do you still take her to Dr. G?

Is Dr. M putting her tubes in?  We really like him and he was superfast.  Emma will be in good hands!

Yes to both. I really liked Dr. M too!

I'm torn right now as to what to do about the pedi though. I really like the staff and the ease of getting appointments but I'm just not overly thrilled with Dr. G anymore. But, I don't want to have to go through finding a new one either. Ugh...
