3rd Trimester

Birth plan? How specific?

My OB gave me a handout on their birthing policies at my appt last week and has asked me to return it with my birth plan/notes (for reference you can see it here, it's a PDF).  Of course my appt is this afternoon and I'm not prepared!

I don't feel strongly about having a "plan" as I am well aware that there are many aspects out of my control and I may have a totally different experience than I expect.  I'm not 100% yes or no on pain medication/epidural.  DH knows this and is supportive of whatever I choose at the time.  I also want to try to BF right away and I'd rather them delay the antibiotic eye drops for a little bit after delivery.

The only thing I am concerned about postpartum are a vaccine - both for myself and the baby.  I was told that my last MMR booster didn't take with the Rubella (when I was 18) and they would give me one after delivery.  After much research I am planning to decline.  I am going to talk to my doctor about it today.  Also, I would like to postpone the HepB vaccine until her first week appointment.

So - have you submitted a 'birth plan'?  What was important to you?

Re: Birth plan? How specific?

  • I have to review my birth plan with the m/w tomorrow (which means I need to fill it out tonight!).  It is always best to mentally prepare for the "what ifs" but the plan lets the providers know what you want as long as things go "normally" and safely.

Important to me: bring a birthing stool in case I want to use that (the rest of equipment like squat bars and birthing balls are already at the hospital, but I have to request the m/w to bring the stool); keep the room cool (they've been really warm on our 2 tours); let me eat and drink as I'm able and desire to do so; no IV or suggestion of medicine unless I request it (standard at our hospital, but I'm putting it in writing, just in case); able to move around, as desired (encouraged by my m/w anyway)

  • I'm on the "no plan" plan. :)

I want to go natural if possible, and I will make an epi decision while I'm going through the birth if I think I need it. I want to BF right away, too. At my hospital, you can have the baby in your room almost 100% of the time you're admitted except for a few nursery trips for medical tests they do.

    this.

my only requests will be no formula (assuming there are no issues) and no pacifier.
