Postponing internals?

I haven't discussed internals with my m/w yet (I'm sure the topic will come up at tomorrow's visit or the one in 2 weeks), but I'm starting to think that my friend had a good idea:  She refused internals until she went to her last appointment before her EDD so that she wasn't getting too optimistic about being dialated early and not progressing and getting impatient.

Personally, I think this is a really good idea, knowing myself and my own impatience.  Plus, if everyone has such discomfort after an exam, I'd prefer not to have that while I'm still working (up to 38w5d).  **obviously, if there are any signs of pre-term labor or things, I wouldn't refuse it then...but if things are still looking normal with no change in symptoms, I might consider this**

Re: Postponing internals?

  • I think I'm going to request they not do internals unless they have reason to think they NEED to do them, at least until my 40w appt

  • my ob mentioned that i could refuse an internal but suggested that, come 40 weeks, they should take a look to see what's going on.  i didn't know that was an option so i was surprised when he said it.  i didn't know why people would - but i guess that makes sense.
  • I like this idea, thank you, I am going to request it at my next appointment too.
  • yes you can refuse them.  My doc only wanted to do one at 36 weeks to make sure everything was still closed since it was early and then i don't have to have another unless i want one.
